This route is fine, especially if it's a daytime drive.
Took this on my return last month, had taken Karwar route onwards. Given that there is lot of construction activity in progress between Ankola and Goa border (right thru Karwar), it maybe a better idea to stick to Dharwad bypass-Alnavar route.
My earlier update is here (Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries)

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Friends,

I plan to drive to Goa this weekend. Plan to start on 22nd afternoon and break at Ankola and proceed to Goa on 23rd. Need to visit Ankola as I have a temple visit.

Is it advisable to take Mundgod route considering I would be crossing this section late in the evening? Or is it better to stick to Hubli-Ankola?

Kindly advice.

Regards
Rahul

The Mundgod route is quite narrow and may not be a great choice for late evening drives, I would suggest you take Hubli-Ankola route instead.

Also, do check on the general situation around the coastal towns of Karnataka before you head out - there have been some tensions around Honnavara & Kumta in the last few days.

Is there a good Restaurant in around Tumkur or Chitradurga? We are starting from Ecity at around 7 and plan to stay overnight in Davangere. By the time we reach Davangere it will be 12 or so and late for dinner

Tumkur has the usual Idly place at Khyatasandra, exactly 2 kms after JAS Exit toll on right hand side.

Pavithra and Ravidarshan are next to each other here.

Then you can stop by at Mysore Cafe, soon after Chitradurga bypass ends.

In between you have Kamat Upachar at Sira as well but on the right hand side.

Between beginning and end of tumukuru JAS Toll there are restaurants on your side in the driving order starting with
1.Shree Ratnam and Shree Vrindavan Veg next to each other
2.KAMATH Upachar
3.KAMATH Upachar and Cafe Coffee Day next to each other.

Further there is nothing worth visiting on your side of highway till you reach Apoorva Resorts 10 kms before Davangere and their restaurant closes at 10pm.

Is this still the best route to go to North Goa? Starting the trip on the 2nd of Jan to (hopefully) beat heavy traffic.

Bangalore-Dharwad-Anmod-Ponda-Panjim-Calangute

Or is there an alternate that is better?

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Planning a quick dash to South Goa (Canacona) what is the advise between the Hubli Yellapur Karwar route and Anmod ghat route? Have done the former on a number of times but read about some disturbance in the coastal towns.

I could leave either early hours of Thu or Fri, apprehensive about bad traffic exiting Bangalore on Fri, any experience from last year?

Also, is one likely to encounter fog in the wee hours in these parts?

Yes, this route is good if you're heading to Calangute.

Going via Karwar is longer, there is road widening activity from the Ankola bypass all the way thru Karwar till the Goa border and then you have to traverse Goa from South to North, not worth it.

Start early and take the Dharwad-Anmod route, avoids the coastal towns of Karnataka.

If you don't mind driving approx. 25-30 kms more, then another option is Bangalore-Dharwad-Ramnagar-Khanapur-Chorla-Sanquelim-Bicholim-Assonora-Tivim-Calangute.

With this route you won't need to navigate through the neighbourhood of Ponda, Old Goa, Panjim, which might have relatively dense traffic, depending on the time of the day when you pass.

Cheers,
Vikram

Somehow, I always felt that Chorla route was a slower option. Even when Ramnagar - Anmod section was bad couple of years ago. Road surface of Chorla was good, but average speed was bit low due to twisty roads.

However, if you are taking Chorla route, for Calangute you can opt this sequence - Chorla-Sanquelim - From the loop back road, instead of taking SH 1 towards Assonora take the right (while you take loop) and head on SH 25 / 24 towards Candola - Betqui to join Ponda - Panaji highway (NH 748). This section has comparatively wider roads and is faster than other options from Sanquelim.

Once you reach Panaji, from near bus stand take right and join NH 17 / 66 to cross bridge over river Mandovi. You can take the immediate left after crossing river, to drive through SH 9 & 13 and join Candolim and head north to Calangute.

Or you can continue proceeding north on NH 17 after bridge and take left from next junction to reach Calangute.

This way you can stop at BP bunk enroute, which is supposed to be one of the better ones in Goa. Location

That said, my personal selection would be to take Ramanagar - Anmod - Mollem - Ponda - Panaji route.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Hello Folks,

Quick update on my trip to Goa last weekend. Took the Bangalore -> Bankapur -> Yellapur -> Ankola -> Goa route. Nothing specific to report. Roads are good throughout. The four laning work after Ankola leads to some diversions but quality of road remains good.

Drove to Mangalore on the way back and the experience was quite frustrating with lot of diversions and pretty heavy vacation traffic.

Regards

I would recommend Bankapur-Mungod-Yellapur-Karwar route to reach Canacona. It doesn't make sense to travel all the way till Hubli & join back at Yellapur. Anmod ghat is out of picture if you are travelling to Canacona from Bangalore.

During our recent trip to Palolem, South Goa, we have opted for a slightly different route, where we took SH-1 to reach NH-52 near Kalghatgi. Drive on SH-1 is much shorter (<20km) and better than Bankapur - Mundgod - Yellapur. While the distance is more, driving time was almost same.

Here is the video taken during return trip from Kalghatgi to NH-48 via SH-1:
