Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

I will be visiting Goa with family next week and staying at Candolim. Planning a drive to Tiracol and then to Malvan via Vengurla, Tarkrali (the coastal route). Is the route scenic and roads good? Since it will be my first drive to that area, anything to be specifically taken care of?

TIA

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Guys, we are doing chennai-goa by road coming Monday, 30th April (leave at 7PM and reach by 2PM next day). Would like to know if there are/would be any issue with TN registered vehicle during that time because of Cauvery issue.
And even if arises, based on previous experience, will there be issue in the areas that we will be traversing Karnataka.
We are 4 adults and 3 kids. Help appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Information for fellow team-bhp-ians:

Started from Bangalore yesterday. Stayed over at Hubli. Took the Alnavar, Anmod, Ponda route to reach Pristine Resort Arrosim Beach today. These days Bangalore to Goa is littered with interceptors and police checking documents. I saw three interceptors from Bangalore to Hubli each before Tumkur, Chitradurga and Davangere, although it seemed they were not quite interested. You can take it for granted that if you enter Hubli town your documents will be checked if the registration is not local. Then again today, I was stopped twice for documents in the Alnavar route, once before the toll gate and again right in the middle of nowhere in the forest.

Documents asked for:
1. Pollution Under Check certificate <--- Primary Doc most people forget
2. Insurance - Liability (Third Party) will do
3. License of the Driver
4. Vehicle Registration Document - keep the original just in case.
5. Keep the Registration Number Plate clean and legible.

One pleasant surprise is that now you don't have to pay entry toll for non Goa registered vehicle's entry into Goa (250 bucks saved :-)

I, more or less, used my discretion or gut feeling to decide when to keep to the speed limit and where to "catch up for lost time." It is ridiculous that the speed limit is 20 in the Alnavar route. Once I entered Goa I strictly maintained 60 / 40 whatever the signs conveyed. Didn't want my license to be confiscated.

Left Chennai at 6PM on 30th April and reached Goa yesterday morning around 10:30AM (Door to door distance was 980km). No police checks anywhere en-route in KA, perhaps because we drove through in the thick of the night and exited at day break. Stuck to speed limits in Ghat section and after entering Goa as well, there were police checks at 2 to 3 places, but wasn't stopped anywhere.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Folks, Need advice.

I am planning a road trip to South Goa with wife and 2 kids. The route shown by Google Maps is Bangalore - Haveri - Mundgod - Yellapur - Idgundi - Ramaguli - Ankola - Karwar - South Goa.

Any suggestions about this route? Is this better than going to Panjim on the highway and then turning down to South Goa?

How are the joints on the highway? The kids are 5 and may need some breaks.

Appreciate all the help.

It depends on destination. What is your destination in South Goa? If it is Margao (Colva) then it makes lot of sense to take Bangalore - Hubli (Bypass)- Ramanagar - Anmod - Ponda (Bypass) - Margao route. But if your destination is Palolem or Agonda then Bangalore - Mungod - Yellapur- Karwar - Palolem/Agonda is the right one.

Loads of joints till you are on NH-48 (AH-47), but once you get off from it, no decent hotels till you reach your destination. You can also check this thread for eateries along Bangalore - Hubli highway.

Thank you. Yes. The destination is near Agonda (Lalit Goa). Do you have any views on the road conditions? Especially after Haveri when we exit the NH.

If you exit the NH at Haveri, you need not go via Mundgod.

In that case, you can do Haveri-Sirsi-Kumta-Karwar-Goa, roads are good from what I know, had taken it in Dec 2016. There are some speed breakers at regular intervals between Haveri and Hangal cross, but road is good, after that it gets a bit narrow but road condition is good. Even Devimane ghat road was fine, don't think it has deteriorated.

Other alternatives are:
1. Turn off after Bankapur toll and go via Mundgod-Yellapur-Ankola-Karwar-Goa. Roads are bit narrow, speeds come down, not much facilities en route. After Mundgod you reach Yellapur and then it is the same route as the one from Hubli. Roads are good, wide 2 laned.

2. Drive on NH till Hubli and go via Yellapur-Ankola-Karwar (this is probably a good choice for you). Roads are good, wide 2 laned from Hubli.

From Ankola onwards, there is NH 66 road widening work but manageable during day time.

*Would suggest you do a day time drive on all these routes since you're with family.

With this, Stick to Hubli - Kalhatgi - Yellapura - Karwar option : Works best when with family.

The Mungod option is not something you do with family if not done before - You may or may not like it although it has its own share of advantages.

Regarding breaks, before you exit the NH on Hubli bypass, the last known good family friendly option would be this : Hotel De Cult.

If you are able to break here, then you will be in Goa/Destination in next 3 hours and hence things will look easier to manage.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Planning on a Goa trip from Bangalore with the better-half next week. Plan is to start early Sunday morning reach North Goa to stay and roam for a few days and then visit South Goa for a couple of days and start back home (Chennai) by Thursday (at least).

Have gone though the suggestions of route for North Goa/ South Goa in this thread and found them very useful.

Any updates on the route suggestions and any other pointers i need to be aware of, thanks in advance.

Since you're driving from Bangalore to North Goa, you can stick to the Anmod Ghat route:
Hubli-Dharwad-Alnavar-Londa-Mollem-Ponda-Panaji and then to your final destination in North Goa.

Thanks for the suggestion, worked out quite well, left at 2:30 A.M and reached Anjuna at sharp 12:30 P.M with a half-hour breakfast stop thrown in. The route after Mollem was quiet bad with lots of diversions and potholes.

Yesterday we drove back to Goa from Bangalore. We took the Bangalore- Hubli-yellapura- ankola-karwar-Goa route.

Left our place on St John's road by 1.30 in the afternoon and reached home, which is near the Goa airport by 10.40pm.
We took a total of 30 min break for the entire journey. Due to Bangalore traffic we reached the shell petrol pump on the tumkur road at 2.15, filled up and continued onwards.

From Bangalore till tumkur there was heavy truck traffic plus long lines at the toll booths, so progress was slow( avg of about 60kmph) after tumkur it's was a breeze to drive except for the next two tolls which delayed us for 8 mins each.

We did get a heavy shower for about 20 min near davanagere so there too we were slow.
Also some part of the highway after davanagere is totally uneven ( about 15km stretch) which makes driving dangerous

We took the hubli-ankola-karwar route to enter Goa and even though it was pitch dark ,the road had those reflectors plus there was hardly any traffic till ankola-karwar junction which made the journey smooth. After that due to the road construction till the Goa border, progress was slow and frustrating due to oncoming traffic refusing to use the low beam.

We did Goa Bangalore on 29(Sunday) in about 7 hours and Bangalore Goa on 6(Sunday) in 9 hrs.

Re: Bangalore - Goa : Route Queries

Returned from Goa (Quepem) to Bangalore yesterday and took the Anmod route as usual. Roads are great, no issues. But spotted speed guns at 5 places. Not sure if they were really measuring the vehicle speeds since they were talking to each other and resting in their vans.
Also due to Karnataka elections we were stopped at 3 places to check where we are from, we are going etc. Also asked to open the bags in couple of locations etc. But that was expected and surely limited to this election season.
Took 4 breaks (around 2+ hours) and took around 13 hours to reach home with very comfortable driving (80-85KMPH speed).

Please can you mention the locations for Speed Guns? Were this around cities or on Tolled expressways?
