I did another trip to Trichy. I again took the Namakkal-> Thuraiyur-> Trichy route. Total distance in this route between Namakkal to Trichy Central Bus Stand came to 100KM (which is approx 10-15KMs more than Namakkal-> Trichy direct route) and it took exactly two hours from 22:00 till 12:00AM.
I would suggest trying this route. But one should be cautious about speedbreakers between Namakkal and Thuraiyur; rough roads here and there.

Thanks for the update k149in.
From Thuraiyur did you reach near toll gate or on to the Chennai-Trichy highway.
From Namakkal town any suggestions for the turn towards Thuraiyur.

Very simple. Go into Namakkal town, and at the police station take a left turn towards Thuraiyur - the right goes to Musiri. There are signs indicating Thuraiyur inside town. Thuraiyur-Trichy route is great all the way.

Road the Namakkal to Trichy update.
Went through Thuraiyur about 10kms stretch is rough with avoidable potholes.
From Thuraiyur-Trichy in good condition.
While coming back from Trichy-Salem took again the Thuraiyur-Thammampatti-Vazapadi-Salem route.
Thuraiyur-Thammampatti average route one side of the shoulder of the road is being done up with concrete.
Thammampatti-Vazapadi good road but too many curves cannot maintain good speed.
Vazapadi-Salem four lane in progress and lot of deviations.
The best bet from Salem-Namakkal-Thuraiyur-Trichy.

How do you divert to Thammampatti from Salem? Is it at Rasipuram?
EDIT: Please Ignore this post. I realized that one needs to go via the dreaded NH68 to hit Vazapadi.

After getting updates on road conditions in above posts, i took Trichy-Thuraiyur-Namakkal instead of Musiri and able to save around 45 mins.

Trichy-Thuraiyur good roads (48 kms - 2 lane)
Thuraiyur-Namakkal (42 kms)... about 10-15 kms avoidable potholes.

Its advisable to take this route always, as Trichy-Musiri-Thottiyam stretch is in very bad shape. You can do only 20-25 Kmph and danger of scrapping your chasis on multiple occasions :Frustrati
Its simply suited only for heavy vehicles... No signs of repairing this road.

Normally, i would take around 2 hours to reach namakkal if via Musiri but able to reach namakkal within 70 mins this time via Thuraiyur.

Thanks a lot for the road condition updates.

Thanks, nfsfreak, for the latest information.

While going from Namakkal to Trichy via Thathaiyangarpettai & Thuraiyur, do we have to go into Thuraiyur town? As per MMI and Google maps, we can take right turn at the Y junction, just before Thuraiyur town. Is it so? How is the road from Namakkal to Thuraiyur, is it 2-laned or single laned?

I will be driving Bangalore-Trichy-Bangalore sometime next month. Kindly enlighten me.

Some one mentioned even Namakkal-Thuraiyur can be avoided.
From Salem take NH68 and goto Thuraiyur via Vazapadi.

But NH68 would be bad.

@ J.Ravi
Pass through Namakkal town easy to locate the Thuraiyur turn near the police station.
Namakkal -Thuraiyur is two laned.
Before reaching Thuraiyur town you get the U turn to Trichy it will not be difficult to locate this turn as Thuraiyur is a small town.
Thuraiyur-Trichy road is in good condition and this road ends just before the Toll gate flyover

@J.Ravi, yes you can take the right at Y junction just before Thuraiyur town.
As Gajadonga mentioned, Namakkal-Thuraiyur is 2 laned and decent, if not great. much better compared to Thottiyam-Musiri-Trichy stretch.

@Ampere, i also thgt of hitting NH68 Thuraiyur-Salem w.o hitting Namakkal. But not sure about the road condition. Then decided, if i could reach namakkal, then its 4 laned all the way till bangalore, hence used that one.

Anyone can update us regarding NH68?

Thanks a lot, gajadonga and nfsfreak, for prompt response. I shall take Bangalore-Namakkal-Thuraiyur-Trichy route.

I am planning to drive to Trichy too post Jan 26th but the route conditions and information on the roads has got me thinking again.

I would have taken the Bangalore->Salem->Namakkal->Thotiyam->Musri->Trichy but for the information.

Quick question

How is the Namakkal->Thoraiyur->Trichy road ? Is it pretty bad ? can you manage 50km/hr ?

Thanks in advance for any info that will help me plan my travel

Cheers

Very good, you can easily do 100 kmph+ in many places. There is a small stretch of bad road though, but that is not a problem.

Thanks a lot for the useful info HVkumarji.

This helps

@csateesh, as HVK sir mentioned, you can do good speeds. I covered the entire Namakkal-Thuraiyur-Trichy stretch in around 70 mins in my Accent.

Namakkal-Thuraiyur you can cover in about 30 mins (less traffic and decent road with few manageable bad stretches). avg speed of 60-70 kmph.

Thuraiyur-Trichy very good roads with moderate traffic. You can again cover this 30-40 mins (till Samayapuram Tollgate). avg speed of 80-90 kmph.

I generally take Namakkal - Pavithram - Thathaiyangar Pettai (T.Pettai) - Musiri.

Roads are better then the other route. Next time I should try via thuraiyur
