It should be Khargpur not Kharghar.

Take route three. It's a much better drive and less stress on your car too.

I have driven from Bombay to North East on Route 2 and 3. I also rode a bike to North East on Route 2. I won't recommend Route 1 because it is full of bad roads and as you mentioned, tough areas. Route 3 is actually very fast and has GQ roads for part of the way - NH4 till Pune and NH5 from Vijayawada.

My drive on Route 3 was as follows:

Bombay-Pune-Hyderabad-Vijayawada-Vizag-Bhubaneswar-Kharagpur-Calcutta-Krishnanagar-Malda-Siliguri. I went on to cover all teh states in the North East in that trip.

The return on that trip was on Route 2, Calcutta-Kharagpur-Keonjhar-Sambalpur-Raipur-Nagpur-Dhulia-Nashik-Bombay

My bike trip was also on Route 2.

I will be happy to PM you my log books (I have detailed log books of all the trips).

One change you can have in the route plan is to take NH2 from Calcutta to Durgapur and take the Moregaon route to join NH34 instead of via Krishnangar. Abhijit Kumar Roy has detailed this route in an earlier mail in this forum.

Thanks a ton!!
But temme, i would be saving like 155km on route (thats like 4%) and im sure i can cover route 3 faster than route 2..so, route 3 makes the most sense here right?

Yes, not only is Route 3 faster (keeping in mind some bad roads in Orissa thanks to last rains), but distance is hardly more.

Hmm.. so Route 3 it is for me. I would love to ride peacefully over good roads than to slow down for traffic/bad roads or ride thru dangerous areas!

No problem, Kumar Sir, he will get the best rosogullas, sorpurias, bengali sweets in Shaktigarh, Siuri, Malda etc...They are better than Kolkata's...

If you take the shortcut Durgapur route, sweets in Bankura and Durgapur is also good (buy some Mihidana and Sitabhog, Langchha), Since you will not enter Siuri, you will take the Siuri BP (there is no sweet shop in BP other than an engineering college and a diploma college till Tilpara barrage), if you enter Siuri you will get some of the best sweets and Morabbas (which is famous there)...

Just before entering Siuri, you will pass through PDCL township, stop by at the road side small stalls (they sell some amazing rosogullas and samosas, the place is called Kochujor)

If you take the NH2, then definitely stop by at Shaktigarh (just before Barddhaman) buy and pack some Sitabhog, Mihidana and Langchhas (which is famous there)

Malda is famous for gor-rosogullas (try to get them hot)...
Sweets of Bankura, Birbhum, Nadia districts are excellent....

Chill out maan

Bunny, Are you sure you can do it as you planned? Frankly I am not sure about your Day2 and Day3 plan (assuming you reach Vijayawada by 8pm and start the next day at 5AM, means you have to get up at 4AM)...Will you be doing night riding? if you are stopping in A1 Plazas in the night for 4 hours and then starting you journey then it is fine as you planned but otherwise it is not...

Day2 has some diversion stretches between Ichchapuram to Sunakhala...
Day3 is very difficult specially after riding this long in the last 2 days...

Plus in bike you do stop in every 100km to stretch your back unlike where we drive continuously for 300-400kms at higher speeds...

Hi Abhi..
i have been doing long non stop stints (pune-del 1690km including detours in 31hrs.. Jallandhar-Delhi 370km some breaks in 5.5 hrs and all..) im used to long stints on my karizma (modded seat) n hence the above plan..

i had chalked out a new route last night, which is saved on my lappy, shall update this topic with the new route later

EDIT:
Day 1 : New Mum-Hyd-Vijaywada : 918km /15.5 hrs
4am - 7:30pm

Day 2: Vijaywada - Cuttack - Baleshwar : 914km / 14hrs
Bypassin Tanuku-Alamuru and going thru Kovvur and hence saving 49km!
5am - 7pm

Day 3: Baleshwar- Kharagpur-Siuri-Moregam-Siliguri : 739km / 14.5hrs
5am - 7:30pm

Day 4: Riding into Phuntsholing (Bhutan)

Second option

Day 1 : Mum-Hyd : 680km
Day 2: Hyd - Chhatrapur : 801km
Day 3: Chhatrapur - Siuri - Maldah : 805
Day 4: Maldah- Siliguri - Phuntsholing : 467

but according to second plan, i reach bhutan late, which i dont want to. I somehow want to make Siliguri by 3rd night...
