Touring to wildlife places

Hey guys, wanted to know whats the best way to explore wildlife in the south? I went through the Jungle lodges and resorts website, from what I could gather, their programme(packages) is too short for the money it costs. Any of you taken those packages offered by them? How was it, worth the cash? Like, they let you stay for a night and the package is from first day noon to second day noon. That includes 1 jeep safari, what if you fail to spot anything interesting? Isn't it better if you stayed for 3-4 days(provided you have time) and hire a cheap local guide, and walk around looking for animals? Staying at JLR and taking their jeep safari everyday will bankrupt you I guess!

So, I want to know if there are any cheap and better ways to do it? like in a DIY sort of way. A lecturer in college is into wildlife trekking, and he says its no longer allowed for people to stroll into jungles, pitch a tent and explore and also, its not easy to get permission for such activities unless you have a lot of contacts. He's from the mech department, so I don't know him that well, so haven't thought of approaching him for more info on this regard.

The point to be noted here is, I don't want to ride through a forest area to reach my destination, but the forest area itself is my destination. I am planning to go to 1) Bandipur/Mudumalai
2) Kabini
3) K Gudi and explore a bit during january 2008, ie semester break.

Is anybody interested in such sort of things here? I am just starting out as of now, so am not entirely aware of the intricate details that one has to know to plan these things, like where to park bike, where to find help/group for such trekking activities etc. Basically, am totally clueless so looking around for help. Any help appreciated. thankyou.
