I know its sounds like a foolish question. But I am not very comfortable driving while facing traffic from the opposite side.
I need to do a Chennai-Tiruchy-Chennai trip sometime next week in a day.
If you haven't done a highway run NH45 is a good start and in most parts it's really good and it's 4 lane. You will love it. I did it once when the 4 laning was on in 3.5 hours and once enroute to Kodai. NH 45 is a driver's delight.

Villipuram: Hotel Woodlands inside Villipuram. Another of the Aryabhavan at the other end of the Bye pass.

Ulundurpet: Another of the "Arya"bhavan / nivas variants just after the Tollgate in the same direction.

Not much options after Ulundurpet. Can try in Thozudur, but need to get off the byepass and search.

The shortest route to Karaikudi seems to be the Trichy - Keeranur - Pudukottai - Karaikudi route, but have not travelled in this route. The Trichy - Keeranur section used to be very bad usually, maybe you can enquire with a taxi driver at the hotel .

Hope this helps

Hey @pugram thanks for these your post and the extra information; it really helps in planning the route well.

I was in Trichy last weekend, and roads are good and no impact due to monsoons. Infact, SW monsoon doesn't impact most of areas in Tamil Nadu.

Trichy-Keeranur-Pudukkottai-Karaikudi was good when i went last in Dec'2010, but to my knowledge the roads are good even now in NH210. If you start early from Trichy, you can reach easily in about 2 hrs time to cover about 90+ kms. Just watch out for truck traffic and be careful, as the roads are two lane throughout.

If you are interested, you can take a short break in Pudukkottai and see the famous Bhuvaneshwari amman temple. It won't take long time to see the temple as it is a very slight deviation on the way to Karaikudi. You can take the same route to return back to Trichy which is the shortest.

-Ravi
Thanks Ravi, I will enquire taxi drivers at the hotel on onward routes.

NH210 is a decent 2L highway.
You can manage about 40-50Km average.
I am not sure how is the bypass at Pudukkottai.

re: Chennai - Trichy : Route Queries

Am planning on driving down from Chennai to Trichy this Wednesday.
I plan to take NH45, but my return will be via Pondicherry on Thursday.

Any info on the effect of the incessant rains on both these roads.

Thanks.

Absolutely no problem on NH45. Its 4 Laned all the way to Trichy.

For the return trip, I suggest you to take Trichy-Tindivanam on NH45 and Tindivanam-Pondicherry. You will get 4 laned road till Pondicherry. Trichy-Villupuram-Pondichery is also another option. You would get 4 Lane road till Villupuram and 2 lane road from Villupuram-Pondy. To come back to Chennai, either you can opt for Pondy-Tindivanam-Chennai or take ECR to reach Chennai. No roads in these routes would have been affected by the recent rains.

re: Chennai - Trichy : Route Queries

Left Adyar at 1 PM.
Crossed Chrompet at 2 PM due to traffic. (22 kms on odo).
Entered Trichy City near Gandhi Market at 6:07 PM.

The last few kms were slow as I don't know the roads here.

Fantastic road. Enjoyed the drive.
Had 2, 10 minute breaks. One for tea at Tindivanum.
Another after Villupuram as my daughter wanted a biscuit+milk snack.

Tolls add up to almost Rs 200/-

One idiot in a Scorpio flying a party flag, caused a minor jam in a booth as he wanted a free ride.

Only a couple of wrong side bikes. They stuck to the extreme left of the road.
The bushes in the median are thick. Need to be careful as people spring out of them like dragonflies.

Benny Chennai-Tiruchy-Chennai is a breeze thanks to the toll highway.

I recently did Trichy - Chennai and the complete log is available below

You can find the complete details / log in the link below. Completed the distance in about 5 hrs and never exceeded 100 kmph

Cycling Workout | Endomondo

Hope it isn't too late

EDIT : Ignore the max speed as there is an issue with GPS log :-( Can't ask for more from a free BB App

Cheers

re: Chennai - Trichy : Route Queries

My return drive.

I did not refuel in Trichy. Left the city by around 11:30 AM. Just after the toll gate near Villupurum, I put in some 6 liters of fuel for Rs 500.
There was a Adyar Anandha Bhavan. Ate some lemon rice and sambhar sadham.

Then I entered Villupuram and proceeded to Pondicherry.
This connecting road is in decent shape. But traffic/ people/ parked vehicles etc make it feel like you are driving thru some suburb of Chennai.

Tanked up in Pondicherry just before I left. Rs 66.xx per liter.
Wagon R mileage with 2 adults and some luggage was about 15.5 kmpl.

The ECR is a nightmare. The road is good but has very limited visibility and the attitude of everyone on the road is aggressive.

The Adyar Anandha Bhavan which you are referring to, is in Ulundurpet. 25 odd kms. before Villupuram.

ECR is good only for the regular travellers on that road. They will get to know about the curves and barricades ahead. First time drive in ECR may be scary sometimes. Still, ECR is my favorite route Pondy .

Yesterday night, was coming back in ECR after a short visit to Mahabalipuram. Traffic was huge and no lane discipline followed by most, esp TNSTC buses.
Hopefully they convert the entire stretch into 4 lane atleast to reduce the growing number of accidents.
