Bombay - Hubli - Mercara ( Hubli-Mercara route options 2014)

>>>

I would like to hear from our experts on the options that I should consider and the route that is recommended from Hubli to Mercara, Coorg.

This will be a day 2 drive for me & family after doing day 1 as Bombay-Hubli.
I understand that the experts favour going up to Harihar on the NH4 and then branching off to Kadur as follows : Harihar- Honalli-Shimoga-Tarikere -Kadur.

Beyond that I am not sure.
I am open to all route options as long as the conditions in the next sentence are satisfied .

This will be a relaxed drive to Mercara, starting at about 8 am from Hubli.
As my elderly mother will be a passenger, I will like to be on a route where road conditions are good. Availability of clean toilets are next, traffic conditions next.

I have some time to decide - I will be driving in end January 2014.

Thank you
issigonis

Shimoga,Kadur option is going to take you more time and bad roads as well.

For good roads,my vote would go for the Hiriyur(NH4)-Huliyar-Chikkanayakkanahalli-Turuvekere-Nelliegere-Melkote-Pandavapura-Srirangapatna-Mysore Ring Road-Hunsur-Periyapatna-Mercara.Road is pretty much straightforward and in very good condition.

The other option is Hiriyur(NH4)-Huliyar-Chikkanayakanahalli-Turuvukere-Nelligere-Channarayapatna-Holenarsipura-KR Nagar-Hunsur-Periyapatna-Mercara.

ranjitp1,

Thank you for the quick reply & recommendations.

If I consider your second option, then the total run is
256 (Hubli to Hiriyur on the NH4) + 342 (Hiriyur to Mercara) = 598 kms in all.
I intend to start at 8 am from Hubli.

The first option (which I haven't checked yet) seems to go past Seringpatnam and a Mysore City bypass. Won't it be a large detour as I will driving south from Hubli and not coming from Bangalore?

In any case it is good to have options... I will check this as well.
Thank you.

C R Patna-Holenarsipur-K R Nagar route is very good. But the direct road from K R Nagar to Hunsur (approx 20 kms) has broken/potholed stretches for about 10 kms. The alternate is to take Mysore road from K R Nagar and turn right when you reach Mysore-Hunsur/Madikeri road which will add about 10 kms extra to the total distance.

I would suggest to leave as early as possible and take the standard Mysore - Hunsur - Kushalnagar - Madikeri route. As far as I know, the road conditions aren't bad on this stretch right now.

I am veering toward the Hiriyur(NH4)-Huliyar-Chikkanayakkanahalli-Turuvekere-Nelliegere-Melkote-Pandavapura-Srirangapatna-Mysore Ring Road-Hunsur-Periyapatna-Mercara route option as addyhemmige, elsewhere has also recommended this, as follows : https://www.google.co.in/maps?saddr=...ra=ls&t=m&z=10

Finalisation of my route in two weeks' time.

Re: Coorg recommendations

Gentlemen,
We (3 friends and me) are planning to go to Ponnampet to attend the marriage of our colleague. We will be leaving Bangalore on 18-Jan at about 3 PM. Vehicle is Etios sedan. Please suggest which route to take: - (considering vehicle is sedan, the time we are leaving Bangalore)

Option 1:
Bangalore - Mysore - Husur - Gonnikoppal - Ponnampet

Option 2:
Bangalore - Mysore - Husur - Periyapatna - Gonnikoppal - Ponnampet (to avoid the Hunsur - Anechowkur stretch)

Option 3:
Bangalore - Mysore - Husur - Periyapatna - Siddapura - Gonikoppal - Ponnampet

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Samish

In fact, the road is excellent, save about 100 meters after Kushalnagar. Of course if you are driving from Bengluru and take the Srirangapatna bypass, that is a terrible stretch, especially after the KRS junction.

Its a brilliant SH and very enjoyable. Absolutely low on traffic. However expect speed breakers here and there. But a pleasure to drive between Neligere to Srirangapatna. In you have a time, you have some amazing places to visit too on the way.

Shravanabelagola, Melkote and Tonnur lake are good options.

Thanks for the information. I also came to know that the Siddapura - Gonikoppal stretch is bad too. So I am left with the following option only: -

Bangalore - Mysore - Husur - Periyapatna - Gonnikoppal - Ponnampet (to avoid the Hunsur - Anechowkur stretch)

Regards

Re: Coorg recommendations

Anyone recently been to Serene woods? What is the current tariff they are quoting? I am being given option of 5000/- cottage(Bed & Breakfast) and 5500/- (Bed, breakfast, dinner). I was looking for a nice place to stay 2nd week of feb and was looking at a budget of 2.5-3.5/4k.. Any suggestions from recent trips? Please advise.

Also is the Mangalore jn to Madikeri route currently good for travel?
