Also is the Mangalore jn to Madikeri route currently good for travel?
Try Casa Coorg and Coffee Trails, I had stayed in the Coffee Trails during last week of Dec, its an awesome place with very good hosts.

Thanks for your reply '2500cc'. I liked the look of Coffee Trails. But I already made reservations with Victorian Verandaz yesterday. Will take up your suggestion on the next visit!

ranjitp1, addyhemmige, ampere, hvk,

A. Should I finalise on the following route from Hubli to Mercara?

<<<Hiriyur(NH4)-Huliyar-Chikkanayakkanahalli-Turuvekere-Nelliegere-Melkote-Pandavapura-Srirangapatna-Mysore Ring Road-Hunsur-Periyapatna-Mercara>>>

Am doing Bombay-Hubli on 2nd Feb; starting from Hubli for Mercara on the 3rd.
(Galibeedu in Mercara).

Attached is ranjitp1's route, ref. A above : http://goo.gl/maps/Owd4v

B. Any BPCL COCOs enroute, apart from the legendary Konduskars outside Kolhapur?

Regards

No problems with this route so far.

After you get out of NH4 at Hiriyur, you wont anything till you enter Hunsur bypass. You have Cafe Coorg in there. And little further up near Periyapatna you have a CCD.

Another option is :

When you cut NH48 4-lane at Neligere, drive a couple of km toward Bangalore till you hit the toll gate. Right on the other side of the toll there is a place called Malgudi. Its a decent place; decent with decent rest rooms. Of course not like CCD.

You can try this alternate route too.

http://goo.gl/maps/Ta3EY

At Nelligere, turn right towards Hassan and take the NH48 till Channarayapatna. The route is Bellur Cross-Channarayapatna-Holenarsipura-Arkalgud-Mallipatna-Shanivarasanthe-Somwarpet-Madikeri.

This route too has good roads all the way to Madikeri and is a bit shorter. Not much facilities on this route though. The last decent place to eat is a Cafe Coffee Day and Hotel Mayura, both near Bellur Cross.

There is also a CCD if you take a right towards Hassan at Nelligere

I've marked the CCD as point F in this map.

Yes I agree Addy that this is a very good option. It did strike to me too. But since he is driving long distance, I did not want to suggest very interior roads. Hence suggested the KR Nagar/Hunsur option. Its some kind of a main road and still a shorter one compared to taking the Bangalore-Mysore option.

ampere,

Very considerate of you to suggest main roads. Many thanks.
My only concern is that I do not speak/understand Kannada in case I have to stop for directions, on interior roads.

Separately, my driving distance is remarkably similar.
On day 1 I drive 582.2 kms (approx.) from Bombay to Hubli. On day 2 I drive 583 kms from Hubli to Galibeedu in Mercara, Coorg.

Expecting to enjoy the (verdant) drive in the Scotland of India.

Meghalaya is also referred to as Scotland- Scotland of the East.

Regards

If you stay at VV, you will not even think of any other place for next visit!

ampere,
Yes it still is the Jetta.
The route as in B in the link below was fine except for zillions of speed breakers.
The car got a few scratches because I let the hotel park it :-(.
Otherwise all went well.
Is route A better than my route B?
