I made the trip last weekend. Started from pune early morning and drove all the way to Ajanta on day 1. Reached there by 3pm and the caves were open till 5:30.
The roads up until Aurangabad were very good. Things turned for worse after that. The roads were horrible and took me about 3 hours to drive from Aurangabad to Ajanta.
The local people drive rashly on those road and all the dust etc becomes unbearable. If you love your vehicle, please wait to visit Ajanta until the roads are done.

We got back to Aurangabad and stayed overnight and on day 2 we visited Bibi Ka Maqbara. I've seen Taj and this looked like a replica of its famous cousin. We were there around 9 so the place was pretty empty.

After this, we headed to Ellora. The roads were good. Cave 16 of Ellora was even better. I loved it so much more than Ajanta. Spent a few hours there and then headed back after a nice lunch. Got back to Pune by 8pm.

Overall a nice trip minus the poor roads between Aurangabad and Ajanta.

True that. However, once the construction is complete, it will be a breeze to drive down to Ajanta as the heavy two wheeler traffic will get space on the shoulder.

By the way, how hot was it there last weekend?

It was not the best time to visit but it was not that hot either. Staying hydrated and having a cap definitely helped.

I'd suggest carrying an umbrella if required.

Ajanta caves are more famous for the cave paintings. As you mentioned, Ellora has more majestic caves.

However, though you did the best utilization of the time available. It would have been better if you were able to have more time at Ajanta. It took us around 6 hours to go through all caves.
We too had visited the last year in peak summer, however visited the caves early in morning and returned by late afternoon. Though road work was ongoing then, both onward and return journey was during non peak time. Hence not much a hassle.
