Just came back from Bangalore to Wayanad yesterday. Roads are all fine, even the Nanjangud stretch is being repaired and is almost complete.

The best time to start from Bangalore to Ooty would be 4AM.

Yes I used the NH209-Chamarajanagar-Gundlupet road to travel to Wayanad last weekend. The road remains decent except for some roadwork between Kanakapura and Malavalli (Details here : http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...ml#post2276846 ). Travel time between NICE road intersection on Kanakapura road to Gundlupet was under 3 hours in spite of the slow downs in the portions where road work is in progress.

If it is under 3 hours, its really amazing! That is very good timing !
The only thing, one would need to come back to the Nanjangud side (2-3Km) to hit the CCD. But I think that is OK.

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

Guys planning bangy mysore ooty 23 apr. There are two routes after Bandipur. one through Masinagudi after which there are like 36 hairpins and the other is through Gudalur which is longer but not so steep. Can anyone advise me of the better route (road condition wise) of the two.
Also how is the road condition after Gundulpet?

Was there for a week beginning March, used the Masinigudi route both ways, roads for most part are excellent, watch out for a number of speed breakers from Bandipur to Masinigudi though. Heard that the Gudalur road has also been resurfaced and is in a good condition. Masinigudi route will save you around 36kms in distance compared to the Gudalur route and if you are an experienced hill driver, around an hours time, worth it unless you want to catch up on Pykara on the way back, then use the Gudalur route.

If it was me, I would prefer the Kallatti(36 Hairpin) route.

Well, the other route is better(road condition) but much longer and not as exciting as the Kallati route.

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

the roads as of last weekend are excellent indeed.
all the way from Bangalore to Mysore - no issue as usual.
Mysore-Nanjangud - been repaired and is far better than it was 4 months ago.
Nanjangud-Gundlupet - been repaired and is in very nice shape.
Gundlupet -Bandipur -Mudumalai - good condition.

Suggest take the 36 hairpin bend route through the Sigur Ghats while going up - dramatic landscape because you literally go up 3000 feet odd in a short time - you will get there much quicker - about an hour less driving time. But to take this road it is better if you are reasonably experienced in hill driving and actually enjoy hill driving.
I wouldnt recommend it to either a novice or a typical city driver.

Coming back you could take the Gudalur route - more scenic and gentler landscape.

Please do follow the hill driving rules and good road manners like not overtaking around curves, staying in the extreme left lane, not honking un-necessarily in the sanctuary area etc.

Enjoy!

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

I had been to Ooty last weekend and the roads are in good condition, took the Kallatti(36 Hairpin) route while going and while returning took the Gudalur route. It is very much drivable.
Not sure why the Driver took the Gudalur route as when he asked
he told they have made it one-way. I doubt this, but did not want to ask more as it was facilitated vehicle and i was not paying for it.

re: Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty : Route Queries

May be little OT. Somehow i always feel while driving back from Ooty to Bangalore via Gudalur, it seems more tiring than driving back via Kallati. Couple of my friends to expressed the same feeling and it always looked it takes very long to reach back Bangalore.

Ofcourse, the distance is 40 kms more in ghat sections is an obvious reason, but do others feel the same?

You at least add 2-3 hours more, if you plan some sight seeing via Gudalur, till the time you reach Masinagudi turning.

Actually, its not a one-way, but for some weird reason, the policemen at the diversion do not allow vehicles to pass through, without an 'unauthorized toll' Maybe because the other way is more safe.

Well, we just drive past, even if the policemen try to stop us, as we know the reasons.

but then, after 6, they wont allow to pass, as they claim its too risky.
