Thanks Kiran. Though your thread doesn't say much about the route i'm planning, it made me plan my third day at kotagiri and surroundings.

Thanks buddy. Thought of taking a different route this time. The masinagudi stretch is treated as no entry on the way back. Anyone taken this road recently?

Again ??? They had done that for a short while a couple of years back (at least unofficially - there was never a "No Entry" or "No Right Turn" board at the junction where yoy turn right for Masinagudi when coming from Ooty), but since then I've travelled that way at least 4 or 5 times, and have always taken the Masinagudi route in both directions.

Even in the unoffical "no entry" days one could easily get away by telling the guys at the checkpost there that you're going to visit Kalhatty falls (as long as you aren't travelling in the late evenings) . And at the Kalhatty checkpost tell them you're going to some resort in Masinagudi, they won't normally ask you to backtrack all the way and go via Gudalur :)

The road conditions between Mudumalai and Ooty is generally very good all year round (except for the steepness of the climb and the fact that roads are narrower compared to the Gudalur route ). But I haven't gone that way for almost a year now, so not sure about current conditions.

That's possible. Anyway, I have reached ooty Wednesday night via masinagudi stretch. The entire road is quite good from Mysore. They even widened after masinagudi town towards ooty.

The 10 KM stretch was filled with mist last night. It is recommended to avoid at the night.

I am planning to go to ooty via Masinagudi stretch on saturday. I also wanted to take Bandipur safari. Do they cancel safaris if it rains? should I be concerned of landslides in the Nilgris area.

I took the safari in bandipur couple of days back, it was raining during that time but the safari was not canceled by JLR. However, even after 3 hours of safari inside the jungle, we couldn't spot a tiger. The driver told us that its very difficult to spot tiger when its raining. Also, the road inside the jungle is very bad due to the rains in the past couple of weeks. If you want to spot a tiger, then this is not the right time to go on a safari. However, it was a good experience going inside deep jungle in an open jeep. If someone has a back pain, then its better to avoid this safari for now.

I tried yesterday on my way back from ooty. The bandipur safari was closed for the past three days because of heavy rain. They say the forest path is not motorable.

There was a heavy rush on the Tamil nadu side of the safari.

I took the Gudallur route, roads are bad compared to the masinagudi stretch.

Need help with 3 things. The best route to Ooty from Blr. Pls note that I stay close to Yeshwantpur and heading out to Mysore road for me is much faster than going to Kanakpura Road. Still, which is better with respect to traffic considering the fact that my onward journey will be on a Thursday morning.

Next, what are the things one can do in Ooty. Right from Boat ride to adventure stuff. I relish both.

Finally, as I plan to stay in Ooty on Thursday, Friday and leave on Saturday morning, was planning to spend a day at Bandipur (or Madumalai) sanctuary. Pls advice a good place to stay. Jungle resorts is a little out of budget.

KALA has already given me lot of inputs. But, was looking at more info from a wider audience.

Cheers

PS: Kala: Checked with Jungle Resorts: They still take you for a safari ride. They charge 300 bucks per head for a 45 min ride. Its either at dusk or dawn. NO NIGHT SAFARI. :Frustrati

What to do in Ooty? Thats a big question :) There are umpteen sites which gives you a big list. I'll try to list a few which u can do in 2 days.

1) Boat ride in Ooty lake
2) Horse Ride
3) Sight seeing : Botanical garden, Tea Factory, Doddabetta, Rose Garden
4) visit conoor and travel in nilgiris train. It will take 0.5 day.

2 days is less for ooty honestly, if you are interested to visit more pristine places like avalanche, emerald, western catchment etc. You need separate trips for them alone.

Parents are in Town and we plan to visit over the weekend. Unfortunately we can only leave on Friday evening or Saturday early morning and need to be back by Sunday night. Request your help with route and places to visit in such a short duration. What would be a better time to start: Friday late night or Saturday early morning.

You want to go to Ooty or any place is fine?

While doing some search on Google, found this resort cum guest house quite decent. Search for Jungle homes or deep jungle homes.

All details are available on their website. You can call them and check for availability.

Cheers

Hello

I am myself driving down south from Mumbai from 11/11/11. My bookings are 13th Gorukana, 14th Kedakal and 15,16,17 Kabini [orange county] from where I return back to Mumbai

I have read and researched a bit on the roads and have come up with a route. Would like your advice since I am traveling south first time and would be with my wife

Day 1 Mumbai - Kolhapur halt [as i would leave late on this day]
Day 2 Kolhapur--???

Now initially I was planning to reach Mysore since my booking of Gorukana is on 13th and due to gate system its no point reaching that area after 6pm. However as per maps it came to my notice that I can take the alternate kanakpura NH 209 highway to Gorukana instead of going to Mysore and coming back. My query here is

a>i would like to skip Bangalore and hence would take the NICE exit to Mysore. is there a route from here to go to NH 209
b>since I would be reaching latte can you suggest a halt place here so that next day I can reach Gorukana with ease. My check in time being 12
c>Should I drive to Mysore outskirts and then next day go to Gorukana

Day 3 Gorukana
Day 4 Kedakal estate [ which route to take]
Day 5,6,7 Kabini
Day 8 ???

here I was toying with the idea of going via NH17 to sawantwadi which is my native place and then go back to mumbai . I have to reach Mumbai by 20th and I leave kabini on 18th so i have 2 days , maybe a stopover in Goa this is subject to how good the NH17 route is till sawantwadi. If the traffic is horrible than I may best avoid it and go back the same way. So suggestions

One more query is about your diesel filling advice. Since I am mostly visiting forest resorts where must I tank up to avoid fuel unavailability

Any good hotels I must not miss for a small snack en route

Any places fuel stations I must avoid

Any safety tips

Waiting for your kind and expedient replies

NICE road also has an exit for NH209. The NICE road coverage is shown below.
(Nh209 is also called Kanakpura Road). So you need to take the Kanakpura Exit.

How ever there are no hotels on the Kanakapura road. I suggest you stay in Tumkur and start on 13th reach the destination.

Kabini-Mysore-Hassan-Bannavar-Shimoga-Honnavar-Ankola-Karwar-Goa-Sawantwadi
But compared to NH4 this would be a much harder ride.

NH4 is lined up Kamat alongwith Petrol bunks. So no issues.
But few facilities on NH209.

@ampere

Thank you so much. How much time would it take for me to reach Gorukana from Tumkur. Should I get bit closer say outskirts of NICE road and halt. Are there any good stay places there which I can find on the net or somewhere

With respect to diesel, which pumps must I fill at, HP, IO BP.
Any safety tips or driving tips while in this region [sppeds, bus, bullocks, two wheelers]

Also while going from Gorukana to Kedakal , canj I bypass Mysore city or you suggest I must go through it since I am visiting first time. I want to avoid narrow lanes and traffic as I drive a safari and most times turning or parking in alien lands becomesa hassle

Comments awaited and appreciated

Regards

That would about 220Km. Tumkur would be easier as getting and out of a hotel is better.
I am not aware of any hotels around NICE road entry on NH4. May be others can pour in with suggestions.

NH4 I think mostly the ones tied to Kamat are BP ones and they are good.
But I would rather leave comment which one to use for the regulars on NH4. (Bombay-Pune-Bangalore thread has lots of info there)

NH4 in Karnataka is pretty clean expect few unmarked humps around Ranebennur railway crossing.
Need to be careful as you would be high speed and the hump appears out of nowhere.

NH209 is not a 4L but a very good and wide road (except within in towns).
So expect all kinds of folks coming in on this stretch. But over all I think traffic is sparse.

I dont the shortest distance would allow you to by-pass Mysore. The easiest way I think what Google suggests.
Gorukana-Yelandhur-T-Narasipura-Mysore-Hunsur-Kedakal

But in Mysore you can use the ring road to by-pass the town.

Kedakal Estate to Gorukana - Google Maps

- You would be entering by NH212.
- Look for directions to Bangalore. That would take you to the ring road.
- You then reach the ring road Bangalore-Mysore road junction
(easily identifiable as there is a Columbia Asia Hospital in at that point)
- Dont turn to Bangalore and continue on the ring road. Take the Hunsur road exit.
And you are on your way to Kedakal.

Hi anyone has any idea about the route via Metupalyam, satyamangalam, chamrajnagar, kanakpura towards Ooty. Wanted to know the route condition if anyone has tried recently, was trying to try this as an alternate route than using the usual Mysore route...for a change :)
