Wikipedia shows that it's a meteorite hit site in Maharashtra. Is there any other attraction?

I intend to ride the 420+ kms and then return the next day.
The max I will see of this crater is the sunrise over the hills and the lake.

I love to ride, the destination does not matter.

You are gonna ride 420+ kms to see a hole in the ground. okk... its a big hole .
I can tell you the ride is going to be a tough one because the temperature is soaring around here.

Anyway, MapmyIndia gives me completely different result with the total distance being 486 kms - MapmyIndia - maps, directions, and local search across India - just search, print and go!

Lonar is a great place to visit, but our routing is all wonky - maybe that is the optimal route as per a computer mapping software but I do no think that any of these roads are good.

My suggestion would be that, take NH9 (Pune road) till Naldurg (before Solapur), turn off towards Tuljapur, and go via Osmanabad, Beed to Jalna (excellen road). From Jalna take the road to Sindked Raja (also one of the roads to Buldhana), and reach Lonar.

Lonar town is totally non-descrepit, and has a solitary MTDC resort. Nothing much to do except that you can climb down into the deep valley.

Ideally, you can combine this with a trip to Aurangabad/Ellora/Ajanta.

Thanks HvKumar but that looks real long.
Will be difficult to wake up and see the sunrise

I have decided on the following route:
split up into 4 parts.
Total distance 486 kms

1. Hyderabad - Bidar 132 Kms
MapmyIndia - maps, directions, and local search across India - just search, print and go!
Sadasivpet at 67.5 Km
Zahirabad at 105.8 Km

2. Bidar - Nanded 165 kms
MapmyIndia - maps, directions, and local search across India - just search, print and go!
Aurad at 42.1 Km
Deglur at 82.7 Km

3. Nanded - Mantha 142 kms
MapmyIndia - maps, directions, and local search across India - just search, print and go!
Purna at 32.8 Km
Parbhani at 63.7 Km
Jintur at 107.9 Km

4. Mantha - Lonar 47 kms
MapmyIndia - maps, directions, and local search across India - just search, print and go!

Some of this distances may not be correct or worst case, the roads may not exist. I know for a fact that many of the state highways on mapmyindia maps are in the wrong place (GPS co-ordinate wise) or do not exist at all.

So be prepared to take some long detours if necessary.

Brief road conditions

Hyderabad to Sangareddy:
There is an excellent dhaba called Moti Mahal just before SangaReddy.
Fuel can be filled up at the HP Bunk opposite BHEL.
Avoid getting on this road very early as the Volvo's are returning

Sangareddy to Deglur:
Good two lane blacktop.
But you might encounter a couple of (I think 5)bad stretches
Each about 1/2 a km long.

Deglur to Nanded:
Nanded has traffic and lots of donkeys.
The only bunk that had petrol available was Reliance (59.25 per liter)

Nanded to Risod:
Bouncing away to glory.
The surface is highly distorted.
I preferred a high speed to ride the waves.
Some parts (40 kms or so) were only one bus wide.

Risod to Lonar:
Decent Road inspite of rain.

Lonar:
Accomadation available (500 Rs onwards) at MTDC.
attached picture taken from the resort.

A small budget hotel right opposite the Lonar Bus Stand.
it had a very small toilet.
travelers won't mind it.
tourists will curse it.

That is the hole, the big hole

Will write a detailed travvelogue some time soon.

I made it well in time to see the sunset there.

The return journey there was hardly any sun at all.

Except me all the other bikes from my club went on Friday.
I rode out on Saturday and returned with them on Sunday.

Sunday the rain was awesome, from a drizzle at 10 AM to a full downpour by 3 PM.
The return route was slightly different, about 40 kms ahead of Deglur we took the cut off for Nizamabad and rode in too Hyderabad on the Nagpur Highway via KamaReddy and Medak.

Left Lonar at 7AM and reached home at 12:30 AM.
Delays included a flat tire, wet sparks and yours truly kissing the road.
