Jamshedpur to Gurgaon - Route Info / Questions

Hello Everyone,
I need to have a car driven from Jamshedpur to Gurgaon. I think the distance is appx. 1300kms. What is the quickest route possible? And how long would it take? Ideally, I would like to do this over a weekend and by taking breaks / and not driving too quick. I figure 600kms a day should take 8 to 10 hours? Does this sound plausible? Would love to get some info from you guys.

Thanks!

Its actually close to 1500kms.
The route you take is across Varanasi-Lucknow etc., and it you may take 24 hours to cover 10kms.
NH 24 its not an ordinary highway. Its highway through hell.
Sometimes truckwallas stop on the road to take a nap. If they sleep for 8 hours you have to wait for 8 hours.
Sometimes the dual carriageway ends in a bottomless pit which will take you to patal lok.

I know I am scaring you, but be scared, be very scared.
From 2006 to 2008, it has gone from bad to worse. Its a Golden quad construction proceeding in a time space warp which is running backwards.

So don't assume 600kms a day. On a good day you will average 30kms/ hour too.
It took me 6 hours to go to Moradabad from Noida(150kms), and that too because I went off road into the villages, people struck in the jam waited for 15-20 hours.

That road often sees day long jams.
I don't have any idea about how the road is after Moradabad, but if Delhi-Moradabad stretch is any indication, it will be a long long trip.
so best is to mark 2 nights halt and 3 days travel for your trip, and whenever you find a good stretch, try to cover the max distance that day.
Lucknow to Delhi is 440kms but often takes 12 hour +

Thanks for the info guys - I was planning to fly to Jamshedpur on Friday and drive the car back by Sunday - This is not going to be a possibility it seems - I am going to let the driver handle the perils of highway to hell - he can take his sweet time and be here whenever - I actually wanted a second occupant who could talk his way out (incase of any highway 'punga') and thought I would have rode along but this cautious travel talk scares me! Is it a good idea for the driver to come alone or should I really try and find a second person?

I think its a good idea having a second person there - of course, I'm guessing that your driver will be armed with a mobile so that you can keep track?

Okay guys - found another passenger so the car leaves this weekend from Jamshedpur. I checked out MapmyIndia.com for travel routes and have figured out 2 routes - One is 1450 Km and the other 1370 km - Also from what I have heard the shorter route is better as it utilizes GT road which is supposedly a good highway. Let me know which one you think is better?

Please avoid the route via Jhansi, roads are not good. Best option is to take NH2 via Kanpur, Allahabad and Varanasi.

I would advise you to stick to the NH2. Have heard that some of the stretches of the golden quadrangle have been built. so you can easily cover a lot of distances in a day.

Per my calculations, the car should be with you in 2 days and 1 night, with proper halts and decent driving.

Update - Yesterday the driver covered Jamshedpur to Varanasi in 15 hours. He left Varanasi this morning at 5:00am via NH2 and is estimating that he will hit Gurgaon by midnight. I told him to take it easy and sleep over somewhere if need be to as 800kms is a lot of track to cover in a day.

A question for gurgaon residents - What's a really really super cheap and basic hotel \ highway motel type place in gurgaon? The driver needs to stay here a few nights before taking a train back to Jamshedpur and I need to put him up somewhere.

Please, no Trident Hilton and Crown Plaza suggestions - I can barely afford those places .

How were road conditions? Traffic Jams? Any encounters with anti-social elements?

The driver is still on route - will find out complete details once he arrives in Gurgaon and update the thread. He has about 600kms to go - I have told him to halt for the night at Agra and continue his journey in the morning tomorrow.

I still need the hotel info if anyone has any?

Road trip complete. Car got in yesterday at noon. Total journey worked out to 1500kms with pitstops and took 28 hours of driving time. Car averaged 9kmpl without aircon (a feat for a decade old cielo). The driver could have pushed it and could have been here Monday night but I recommended him to halt at Agra overnight (He reached Agra at 8:00pm).

Roads were pretty bad from Jamshedpur to Varanasi. It got progressivley better. As for anti-social elements - the driver did say that he had many inquisitive people in UP come up and ask what a car from Bihar (BR16K reg.) was doing here and he felt unsafe a few times when people started hovering around him.

The car reached fine without any major malfunctions along the way and as it entered Gurgaon - it got it's first peck from a honda civic - nothing major - a little fender bender that a touch up job should take care of. However things went a little worse from there. As I took the car out at night for a quick drive to make sure she was all okay, the damn ignition switch shorted and I was left stranded in Sushant Lok! In all fairness, the ignition switch has gone kaput after 10 years (The original switch never gave problems unlike other cielo's and astras where I believe this is quite common). I am getting a replacement switch today and hopefully I will have an uneventful summer.

Thanks for the quick update - one of the very few on this NH2 route. Most worrisome are the safety issues, not just the bad roads. Any further feedback on these 2 issues will be invaluable. Maybe the BR number plates made his passage through BIhar easier.

He was more concerned about UP than Bihar - could be a number plate thing. Also if anyone wants to know - Total journey including fuel / tolls / food and accomodations (Albeit basic) worked out to Rs.9700. If I include the Driver's train tickets and other incedentals - total cost comes out to 12000. So I still saved over getting the car sent in a truck, even if it is only 30%.
