Urgent route enquiry -- Char Dham visit

Hey guys,

We are planning a trip to cover Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath starting next weekend. We've 8 days. My parents, my sister and myself would be travelling and I and my dad will be driving. We'll be starting on 22nd june and plan to come back on 29th. I've no idea about the roads and the condition in that area.

Please suggest

1. In which order should it be done ?
2. How are the roads and what are the better routes ?
3. Any link to the road map ?
4. Is it a good time to visit this area ?

It's already quite late and not much time left for planning. Please help me.
Waiting for replies ...

It should be done in the order

Yamunotri, Gangotri Kedarnath and Badrinath or vice versa

Dont remember the route but yamnotri can be reached from dehradoon and Badrinath through rishikesh

The Time is good to visit the place ( just ideal)

Dont forget to carry loads of food and water

When i went there it was a problem getting food and water( though it was available)

Road Map can be gained from any tour operator in dehradoon or rishikesh

Roads were nice apart from a few of them , the best out of these were on the way to and back from Badrinath

You can even visit AULI ( the highest ropeway) , a snow filled resort kinds

Naman,

I did the Char Dham in 2005 in this order:
Badrinath-Kedarnath-Gangotri-Yamunotri

Please see the following link - it has a detailed log book of my drive from Bombay via Delhi and Rishikesh, and is the shortest and the optimal route.

H V Kumar - Driving Log Books - KUMAR'S DRIVING LOG BOOKS Uttaranchal, Sep 2005

You can do this trip within the time frame you have in mind.

Please note the gate timings at Joshimath for Badrinath.

Please also note that in several areas, roads are closed between 8 p amd 6 am.

I would be very cautious about going to Gangotri now because the road from Batwari onwards to Harsil can be very bad.

All old maps of Uttaranchal are wrong because of the realignment fo the roads around Tehri town (under dam waters now, replaced with New Tehri), which adds at least 20-30 kms to the earlier route.

Expect heavy traffic now, and also disruptions due to heavy rains and ensuing landslides.

My suggestion would be to do the trip best in Sep-Oct after the pilgrim season is opver and rains have stopped.

Please PM/ call me if you need any further inputs.

Thanks for the pointers. Infact for the past couple of things, I was planning to cut it off.

So now we have changed the plan to travel to central india.
