This is the route I take every year to reach the backwaters.

Bangalore - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Thoppur - Salem/Mettur - Bhavani - Avinasi - Coimbatore - Walayar - Palakkad - Trichur – Cochin(Vytilla bypass)- Chertalla.

I cant remember the exact distance though, was close to about 475kms or so.

In terms of good routes you can either take:

Bangalore - Mysore - Gundulpet - Kalpetta - Calicut - Cochin

or

Bangalore - Mysore - Nanjangud - Chamrajnagar - Sathy - Coimbatore - Thrissur - Cochin.

I don't have the breakup of kms exactly, but I believe the second route is the shortest.

Travelling time should be around 10-11 hrs approximately.

570 Kms, 12 Hrs + Possible

Hai Prithvi,

Distances from my trip logs for you:

Bangalore to Palakkad BP via Krishnagiri Mettur : 415kms = 6-8 hrs

Palakkad BP to Cochin BP Start @ Junction of NH17 and 47 = 130kms = 3-4 hrs.

Cochin BP to Shertalai BP=27kms (not sure, I think my old log is wrong by +/- 10 kms or is it more?) 1-2 hours.

The time taken would depend on the traffic, on the wee hours from Palakkad to Shertalai can be done in about 3+ hours.

Total on this route = 572.

Happy driving,

Monsoon update - road is damaged between Kalpetta and Calicut, and also Mysore-Nanjangud-C H Nagar-TN Border.

Thanks for that update.

Which would mean he'll have to take Bangalore - Hosur (either through Krishnagiri or Rayakottai) - Thoppur - Mettur - Bhavani - Avinashi - Palakkad - Thrissur - Kochi. I'm assuming Palakkad - Thrichur road is ok these days.

The shortest route to Cochin would obviously be Bangalore - Mysore - Gundlupet - Gudalur - Nilambur - Perinthalmanna from - Pattambi from where one can either go via Trichur or via Kodungallur to Ernakulam. Am not sure about the current road conditions though apart from the regular "Bad Stretch" between Gundlupet and Bandipur Park entrance a stretch of about 15 kms. From Ernakulam one can always take the NH47 to Shertala.

Hi Prithvi,

Shortest route (in terms of time) is the one rjstyles mentioned.

Ramkya, Cochin BP (starting) to Cherthala would be around 45km and should take about 1 hour, depending on traffic on the BP; it's 27-30km from the other end of the BP (Aroor side).

Cheers,

This route will be the best to take. Only in the Bandipur area around 20-30km stretch was bad during my last trip (2 months back). Truck traffic is less but the roads are hardly 2 lines in most of the part including NH17, so overtaking may not be that easy once you touch Kerala boarder.

Shortest route to Cherthala would be
Bangalore-Mysore-Gudalur-Nilambur-Shornur-Trichur-Ernakulam-Cherthala.

The drive could take 10-12 hrs depending on your driving style, time of the day (of the trip) and number of stops.

Regards
Rex

One suggestion though. Navigating Trissur town is difficult, better to come from Nilambur via Mannarkad to Palakkad and take NH47 from there.

Agree with hvkumar. Especially the 10km stretch from Trichur city to NH Bye-pass (towards Cochin) is never-ending with narrow roads and heavy bus traffic.

Was Not Sure, Thanks.

Jimmy,

My confusion was whether its 27 KMs from Aroor side or from the begenning of the BP @ Palarivattom side. Thanks for the update.

I have old logs, point-to-point of most areas of Kerala, specially central and southern parts.

As per my log books, distances are as follows:

Cherala- Vayalar, 9 kms
Vayalar-Aroor/Bypass beginning, 17 kms
Turn left, and Kochi Thoppumpady is 9 kms
Turn right onto the tolled bypass, and Ernakulam Vytilla Jn is 11 kms
The Kochi bypass ends 7 kms beyond Vytilla Jn.
