Do not forget to go to Tea factory ( highest point in Munnar), scenic to factory was just awesome. You need to hire a jeep and a professional driver to go there.

You don't need to hire a jeep if you have a vehicle with high clearance. I took my bolero up there, and it is a 2 wheel drive model.

I guess a scorpio should be able to do it too.

Are you sure that you are referring to Kolkumalai tea estate? It was very difficult terrain during rains for us.

Just Visited Kolukumalai during Summer and the terrain was very hard and don't think even a 4WD Scorpio will be able to make it easily. Suggest to hire a jeep there. I paid Rs 1200/- for a round trip and later realized there were others ready for Rs 1000/- As well.

Hi

Planning to take Bangalore- Salem - Karur - Dindigul - Periakulam - Bodinayakanur route to Munnar. Self Drive.

How is the route? Any better routes?

Where are the good vegetarian eating joints enroute? Travelling with my mother; so any rest room recommendations?

Thanks a ton!

Its pouring in Munnar. Even if the roads are good, there wont be much to see. Just because you may not be able to go out at all.
Do consider that aspect too.

Thanks. The idea is to de-stress & chill. From that perspective rain is perfect! Hot pokoda weather

Hi! Even we are planning to travel this month end (may be 23rd Aug). Hope the weather holds up then .
What are your travel plans? I am planning to take the same route (Theni-Bodinayakanur-Munnar) as the Udumalaipettai - Munnar road is not in very good condition. In fact there were reports of landslide in this route.
I think there are plenty of vegetarian eateries on NH7 - the prominent one being A2B ghar.

Regards,

Samish

Hi

We came by that route last night. Rains upto Salem delayed us but surprisingly no rain after that.

Road is brilliant but for about 30km of ghat near Bodi. They are widening the road & the usual bunch of idiots can cause a block.

Took us about 9:30 hours door to door.

Thank you @sridhu for the information.
How is the weather in Munnar now? Is it raining very heavily? Which hotel / resort / homestay did you book?

Not raining at all!

Staying at Club Mahindra

Update: the ghat road from Theni side to Munnar is closed from 8am to 4 pm. (should be like this for a couple of months). On the way back we are forced to take the Udumalpet route. Going via Dharapuram to hit AH43 just before Karr.

Road is pretty good until now - undivided but good surface like old national highways.

Will update if the road condition changes before we hit the NH.

Quick update: road diversion near Chiknapuram. Marked only in Tamil. Follow the traffic. Construction seems to be starting.

Thank you @sridhu for the update.
Unfortunately, we may have to cancel our trip due certain circumstances.
By the way, I had heard that the Munnar-Udumalaipettai road was closed due to landslide near the chinnar sanctuary. How was the ghat section roads?

Regards,

Samish
