Please take care that the Taj is closed on Fridays. Plan accordingly.

Based on the feedback here and some received via PM, we are going back to the drawing board. Apparently our plan is nowhere near practical.

A suggestion -

1. Flight upto Jaipur.

2. Cab from Jaipur to Agra. You'll get plenty.

3. Shatabdi from Agra to Jhansi. Skip Gwalior, there isn't much to see.

4. Cab from Jhansi station to Orchha (abt 16 KM). Orchha is highly recommended, spend at least a day there. In this rainy season, Betwa would be over-flowing making Orchha even more beautiful.

5. Cab from Orchha to Khajuraho (about 160 KMs)

6. You can also plan an excursion from Khajuraho to Panna National Park (about 30 KMs).

7. Cab from Orchha to Jhansi.

8. Train from Jhansi to Delhi/Agra for onward flight.

Hi,

We visited Khajuraho, Orcha about a month back and here's what might help.

The above program (ntomer) is a nice suggestion. Orcha was not good comparing to khajuraho. So, you may skip the night in Orcha. Instead from Jhansi you may go directly to Khajuraho and relax and watch Light and Sound show in the eve. Next day visit the temples in the morning (as early as possible) and keep evening free and enjoy the resort. Following day leave early in the morning and visit Orcha enroute catching train (Shatabdi) from Jhansi to delhi or you can spend more time in Orcha and catch an overnight train from jhansi to delhi.

This way you can save a lot of time and road travel as well. Also, during this time there are huge VFM offers at all the resorts in Khajuraho. You can enjoy any of these.

FYI, we travelled from Jabalpur to Khajuraho. Stayed in khajuraho for two nights (at Usha Bundela). On following day left khajuraho early (7 am), covered Orcha and reached Delhi by 10 pm. This was part of our trip from delhi -> bhopal -> panchmarhi -> jabalpur -> khajuraho -> orcha -> delhi. We were advised to avoid Panna in the rains.

Let me know if you want to any further details.

Hi naman, did you take your car?
What is the approximate driving time from Delhi-Khajuraho? I guess Delhi-Jhansi would be 7-8 hours?
How are the roads and safety etc.,?

Hey tanveer,

Yeah we did that on our NHC Vtec.

Roads are a mixed bag. Till Agra its awesome. Then its a nightmare to pass Agra (the rains have made it worse). Once through, roads are similar till gwalior with much less traffic compared to delhi-agra except a 15 km patch near Dholpur. Road from gwalior to jhansi are a total mess with lots of potholes. However, it could be fun on Safari . From jhansi khajuraho is 170 kms of which most are good single laned with sparse traffic. Some sections are very narrow due to construction, barely wide for two cars to pass. Overall 50 km would he hard on this section.

MP travel should be avoided in night, infact after dark. Also, Gwalior onwards the route is said to unsafe in nights. Daytime there is no problem. Also there are no dhabas/highway restaurants after agra. So you will have to break at the cities in between.

Travel time till Jhansi would be around 8 hrs. Khajuraho will be another 3.5-4 hrs from here. With breaks should be doable in 12 hrs. Total distance from Faridabad is 560 kms.

Agree. AVOID traveling after dark/dusk in that belt of Gwalior/Bhind/Morena/Datia etc.

I have lived/traveled extensively through this area and know how it get's there after dark. However, my knowhow is from 1996, so things may have changed now .

Have driven through the night on at least 2 occasions in the Agra-Morena (Chambal Valley)-Gwalior-Shivpuri-Guna stretch - and also when NH3 used to be a 1-lane road - and it can be pretty lonely although truck traffic has increased consierably nowadays. Facilities are poor, did not happily face any safey issues.

Finally we decided on Jaipur-Bharathpur-Agra-Gwalior-Orcha-Delhi all in an Indica tourist Taxi. Totally 8 days. Hopefully Oct 7th-8th we should be in Delhi and then fly back from there.

Now suggest a great kebab place in Delhi where we can meet you Delhi boys.

That's great Samurai. Should be a great holiday to enjoy.

Oh, as for kebabs, for authentic taste, nothing better than Karim's in Old Delhi .
Old Delhi is HEAVEN for foodies. You just have to know the alleyways. Come to think of it, there are alleyways named after food -- like 'parathe wali gali'

Cheers,
