Indian online roadmap website

Hi All,

Can you please let me know which are the websites through which I can find the roadmap between two indian cities and also the distance and alternate routes if any.

Are there any interactive website for indian roads.

Try Mapmyindia.com....it is not very interactive, but fairly useful. No alternate routings though.

The most dependable road map in India is the Eicher Road Atlas. Unfortunately it doesn't have an online version. Buy the hard copy book. It's worth it and will be an asset if you travel around. It's good for dreaming about road trips too. Of course it doesn't have the new GQ details. But it doesn't really matter. Because you don't actually need an atlas to use the GQ.

I have been using Lonely Planet India and Bangladesh Travel Atlas since the last 5 years. It is good enough and serves the purpose.

Haven't seen the Eicher Road Atlas though. So, cannot compare.

Besides Yahoo India Maps and mapmyindia, another website I recently found while browsing posts in TBHP is http://www.mapxl.com

You know what, the best option in India is our fellow D-BHPian by the name of "H.V Kumar". (handle: hvkumar)

He is a walking encyclopedia of maps, distances, routes, hotels etc for ALL OVER INDIA and that to with the latest information.

Nothing beats him for route info.

PS: And he is one of the best gentleman and human being around.

I second that

. Nothing like On the ground "Humint" (Human intelligence).

Most of the maps available - mapmyindia/Yahoo or live have lots of inaccuracies. So the "shortest/fastest route" thrown up by these website may not really exist in reality.

Agreed. Best is to ask T-BHP ! You'll most certainly have hvkumar answer and then you could use an online map to help you out. Don't follow any of the driving directions blindly, especially in India. They might lead you elsewhere. :-)

So many links. Great. I usually use google, mapmyindia & wikimapia.org.

I am yet to get the Eicher Road Atlas. Its a must to have.

I second Khan Sultan on HVK. Eicher is probably coming out with a new updated edition. I am not too sure if they already have. Most online maps are just plain "bakwas". They will get you nowhere. Just give you an approximate idea.

Most undependable - happy to send you a digest of misakes in Eicher. Rely on it at your peril.

Most of these map books(I have TTK as well as lonely planet India and Bangladesh map book) have mistakes, esp in Uttranchal and Himachal roads, indicating roads where none exist.
ditto for mapmyindia.

Lesson is that don't depend on one source - check out 1-2 maps, both physical and online, and ask around a bit.
