It is true that if you visit Puri you should be mentally prepared for the ill treatment of the temple people. It seems it is the customary to beet devotees with the cane stick. As we are in pilgrimage better put some money in their hands and have Dharshan and move.

Beat with a cane? Is this really true?
If someone beats me, I'll bloody well beat him back.

Does this happen all the time or only during the rath yatra time?

Could be an exaggeration, but there are instances where they try to make the guys having darshan move faster by using such despicable methods.

Those Puri Pandas are notorious for their gang mentality---they even prevented Indira Gandhi from entering the temple when she visited as a PM. The logic given was that she had married someone outside her religion and hence not admissible. She could not enter the temple!

Regarding more info on Orissa, I suggest you PM Car-go, a local member from BBSR.

They're just broken cane strands. It doesnt hurt you at all, but sure bugs the hell out of you.

Go through my recent Puri/Konark/Chilka travelogue. I believe you'll find lots of useful info.
