Bangalore - Kodaikanal - Velankanni : Route Queries

Folks, need advise on the route and road conditions from Bangalore to Kodaikanal to Velankanni. I did some research here and from earlier posts - the route to Kodaikanal seems fairly straight forward.

Bangalore to Dindigul (thru Salem) onto Kodai Road to Kodaikanal. Does anyone here know about the condition of the Kodai Road. The rest is all National Highway and should be ok, I guess.

I need help on the route from Kodaikanal to Velankanni, distance, road condition etc., any information will help.

Plan to travel during the Pooja holidays, the car is an Accent CRDi, spouse + 2 kids, aged 6 and 11.

thanks

Hi,
Kodai to Dindigul- 65+ km
dindigul to trichy- 98 km
trichy to tanjore- 56 km
tanjore - needmangalam- tiruvarur- nagapattinam- 85 km
nagapattinam- velnakanni- 12 km.

Watch out for the right turn before entering nagai for velankanni.
Use the bye pass as you enter trichy and and also as you enter tanjore.
drive safe.

A better route to Kodai would be Blr-Hosur-Rayakottai-Palakkodu-thopppur-mettur-bhavani-Kangayam-Dharapuram.At Dharapuram, ask for Palani route and on this route you can deviate to Kodai.
This route is very less in traffic, excellent route (up to Dharapuram I can vouch) and after that also, it should be fine. This way, you can skip Dindigul.

Do not go via Salem. Salem - Namakkal stretch is pretty pathetic from what I hear and would not recommend it.

Route mentioned by joecherian works best.

26th 1430 Bangalore to Salem (stay at Salem castle)
27th Early morning (means 7 am to 8am) Salem Namakkal Karur Dindugal Vatlagundu Kodai (since I am more familiar with these routes and all towns have bypass)
Can sombody suggest alternative routes? Salem Erode kangeyam tharapuram palani kodai
I need to know if these towns have bypasses to avoid the hectic city traffic especially erode / kangeyam
Kodai I am staying at Kumaragiri not sure if links are allowed here to hotels. buzz me in private.

Bangalore to Velankanni

Hello All,

I am planning a trip tomorrow to Velankanni from Bangalore with my wife and 2 kids. The route presently I have in mind is

Bangalore > Salem > Namakkal > Thottiyam > Musiri > Toll Gate > Trichy > Tanjore (NH 67) > Nagapattinam > Velankanni.

I do not want to get into Trichy town so thought of taking NH 45 Bypass (Cumbum Rd) from Trichy toll gate and then take NH 67 towards Tanjore.

The accommodation has been booked in MGM Hotel, Velankanny read from many traveloges that the place is a pretty decent one. Would really appreciate if you have any feedbacks on this place

We are planning to leave Bangalore by 5 AM and reach Velankanni by around 3 PM. with few stops in between like Breakfast at Salem and Lunch in Tanjore.

So frequenters on this road if any please let me know how feasible the plan is and if you are aware of any alternate routes with good roads.

Know that it is bit late to pose a query to get inputs, but better late than never.

Thank you.

The fastest route from Bangalore to Kodai is via Dindigul. Route profile as follows:
Bangalore-NH7-Hosur-Salem-Namakkal-Karur-Dindigul-turn off NH7-Vathalgundu-Kodai

The other route (preferred till recently) is as follows:
Bangalore-NH7-Hosur-Bhavani/Salem-NH47-Perunthurai-off NH47Gangeyam-Dharapuram-Palani-Kodai

From Kodai to Velankanni:
Kodai-Dindigul-Melur-Pudukottai-Thanjavur-Tiruvarur-Velankanni

For return journey, take the following route:
Velankanni-Thanjavur-Trichy-Musiri-Namakkal-Salem-Bangalore

NH7 till Dindigul is fantastic.
Road widening is on in NH67 from Trichy to Thanjavur.
Avoid NH67 between Trichy and Karur, instead take teh SH via Musiri to Namakkal.

Any recent update on perunthurai route to reach Kodai. Specifically I am looking for answers to

1. Will this road be cooler in summer time compared to Namakkal route?
2. Is this crowded?
3. do I have decent food joints with clean toilets ( I dont care, but my wifey does )
4. are there good petrol bunks?

Finally, what is the typical time to reach Kodai from Salem through this route? ( keeping the speed between 80-100 kph )

Makes no difference.
Traffic is more because of the Salem-Perunthurai stertch.
Plus you have more 2-lane roads, and need to pass the towns of Gangeyam and Palani.
Hardly any decent food and toilet facilities, but Palani is a large town.
Refuel in advance on NH47 itself between Salem and Perunthurai.

hvk a pilgrimage is in the making at home. Whats the best route for Velankanni from Bangy ? I usually do a stop over at Pondy and then drive on from there. I am just contemplating on a direct drive from here if things are well.

Only reason why people stick to the other route is because its more scenic. Else NH7 is the best option in terms of ease of commute.
