Hey Folks,

After spending two years in Delhi and 1 in Chennai, I came back to Kolkata last year. However, am yet to come across some really good driving destinations from the city. Back in Delhi, we did Agra, Lucknow, Rishikesh, Mussorie and Manali and from Chennai, we did almost the entire South.

Does anyone have any route plans for places around 300 kms frm Kolkata...apart from the usual Digha, Santiniketan and Mandarmoni? I feel I'm loosing my driving spirit driving among the autos, trams and buses of the city. In fact, my 4 wheeled babies are almost crying out for a long drive:Frustrati.

Any ideas?

Premjit

Note from mods: Thread moved to relevant section.

there are many places around kolkata.
Massanjore
Mukutmanipur
Junput
chandipur
Ghatshila
Bishnupur

Gadiara
Confluence of Hooghly, Rupnarayan and Damodar

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. We don't have many Agras and Lucknows around Kolkata !! In terms of places of historical significance/importance we only have Behrampore (highly go-able). What we do have are a few Puris (Orissa) and lots of bhajis (off beat places). Bagchi is a good resource to tap. He has been to virtually all the places worth going to. ADC is also worth cultivating for information on offbeat destinations, especially jungles of eastern India.
The travelogue section also has a few destinations described by other members.
Darjeeling/Dooars/Sikkim and Bhutan are nice destinations for summer. But the road is not the smoothest.
You could explore a few places in Jharkhand too. Like Dolma hills outside Jamshedpur is definitely worth a visit (it's just beyond Ghatshila described by Bagchi).
Of course, please don't compare the tourism infrastructure of eastern India with those of north India. We are nowhere close.

What West Bengal has to offer, no other place in the world can offer.
Don't believe me! keep watching this space.

Talsari
confluence of River SubarnaRekha and the Sea, just beyond the borders of West Bengal

Mython and Panchet - Twin Dam over Damodar River at Jharkhand, at the edge of Bengal Jharkhand Border

Murshidabad City of Nawabs, the capital of last free state of India.
Besides the waters of Bhagirathi (Ganges) the city is full of history.

Have you been to Bhalki Machan? Wanted to have some feedback on the place before I go there.
Sudipto

Gangani - West Bengals very own Grand Canyon.

One of the most amazing sights of Bengal

Just back from a trip from Durgapur. Only 176 kms from Kolkata thru Kona Exp and NH 2. Excellent road condition, drove at 145 in few stretches. Stayed at Resort Riviera,Durgapur. River Damodar can be seen from the resort. Very friendly and cooperative service. A trip to Barrage, highly recommended in the evening. To soothe ur nerves from the drive, a nice clean swimming pool is there and well lit in the night. Hotel Riviera contact numbers - 9830155510/9831752626
