Planning to drive down to Kochi this Dec from Bangalore. I have done it 2 times before and I usually take the BLR-Krishnagiri-Salem-Coimbatore-Palakkad route. I have also gone through the related detailed thread on that route here.

I heard certain stretches are really bad now and not recommended - so to anyone who has travelled recently in that route - can you please share your experiences?

you dont have to go to salem to reach coimbatore ... after ammapetai you can take bhavani - perundurai -avinashi - cbe or anthiyur - gobi -sathy - cbe .... the first route has more traffic and also has some road works going on that stretch , till palakad , all routes are in good condition to drive in my opinion , after that i donot have a clue

thanks - i definitely remember crossing bhavani on the way. I guess you recommend Anthiyur route. Where does that come and what sign should i look for?
