But recent reports refer that the roads around Ramnathapura do not remain in good shape.

Somwarpet-Ramnathpura-Saligram-Bheyra (On the KR Nagar Mysore road) was majorly broken for quite some time. But I was not aware how the vertical cross sections have been around Ramnathpura. Holenarasipur-Arkalgud-Somwarpet-Shanivarsanthe is usually good but roads are very twisty. But their condition keeps changing.

Reason why instead of deviating off at Bherya, one would continue on good roads to KR Nagar and then reaches Hunsur. This is because Hassan to Mysore road has mostly remained good from the last 2 decades, except recently when the road was getting expanded and I had reported here first in mid 2020:

And when it was all done this year:

  • Holenarasipura to Hassan is now mostly 4 lane (Marking pending)
In summary, you can very well take this route over the other alternate (KR Pet - Channarayatapatna) if you are planning Mysore to Hassan. Also note that Elwala (Bilikere) to Mysore remains pothole ridden.
So, even if the internal routes leading to Somwarpete are ignored as it doesn't fall on Mysore - KR Nagar road, Hassan-KR Nagar Elwala being a very important connecting road between the 2 districts usually grabs the attention first and remains good throughout. The only time this road has ever gone bad was when it was getting expanded.

Re: Bangalore - Coorg : Route Queries

Any RTPCR requirements for entering Coorg if driving from Bangalore (all passengers are fully vaccinated with certificates)? Asking this in view of the recent spate of restrictions by the Karnataka government.

As of now the district administration has not mandated any such requirement. However, please call the resort or place of stay and ask them once if they have such a requirement to be followed for their guests. It has happened in the past where one was not asked to produce any such certificate to enter the district but the district administration had made it mandatory that guests getting accommodated at hotels and resorts need to carry negative reports and that it was the responsibility of the resort/hotels to ensure this was checked and followed too.

Fully agree.

Already seems to be a cluster in the Tibetan Lama Camp at Bylakuppe, and the particular enclave is being sealed: https://www.deccanherald.com/state/t...a-1059035.html

Re: Bangalore - Coorg : Route Queries

Started at 6 am from CV Raman Nagar and reached Magnolia resort at 12. Route was Bangalore, Mysuru ring road, Hunsur, Gonikopalu, Virajpet.
Bangalore Mysore Road continues to be terrible with multiple diversions and speed breakers. No way it's going to be completed in next 5 years at least. Took 2.5 hours for 150 kms.

Mysore Hunsur road was a mixed bag with some great stretches and some suspension breaking patches. Not to be outdone, regular unmarked speedbreakers add to the misery. Wonder why they have speed breakers as the potholes do a commendable job. To add to the fun, traffic on this stretch was very extremely heavy. Mainly cars and our F1 wannabes KSRTC boys.

Then there is a Left turn road going thru Nagarhole tiger sanctuary. This has speed breakers every 200 meters but these are designer type with slope and flat top surface of red tiles. The bad patches continue here too with humongous potholes and broken roads.

All in all a forgettable drive.

Hassan road is any day better, even if there is a traffic jam at the end of it

Re: Bangalore - Coorg : Route Queries

Returned to Bangalore today taking Gonikopalu, Periapatna, Ramnathapura, shortcut to H Narsipur as shown on GM road is narrow but fantastic, CR Patna, Neelamangla, Hasarghatta, Yelahanka, CV Raman Nagar.
Distance 306 km, driving time 6h 44m,
Roads have generally gone worse after the heavy rain in October. Broken roads after Gonikopalu for about a kilometer.

This road is closed from CR Patna to Hassan highway, one has to take diversion as marked in Blue.
Bangalore - Coorg : Route Queries-img_20211229_163033.jpg

This stretch of 6 kms was BAD but thereafter till Yelahanka roads were super.

Bangalore - Coorg : Route Queries-img_20211229_163118.jpg

This stretch of 4 kms again BAD but work is going on and it should be good in another couple of years

All in all a tension free drive and highly recommended.

Re: Bangalore - Coorg : Route Queries

Hi All,

I am planning for a road trip from Bengaluru to Coorg. Could you please suggest the best possible route with good road conditions and amenities available? I am travelling with both elders and infants, so want the journey to be as comfortable as possible.

Thanks

If amenities and peace of mind is your preference, then just stick to Mysore road. Yes, there is construction work going on, but the diversions are smooth and road surface is good as well. I just did it last weekend.

Plethora of amenities and peace of mind as you are on a busy highway through out.

Mysore Road - Hunsur Road - Kushal Nagar - Madikeri (or wherever in Coorg you are heading to)

Of if one stays in north Bangalore or closer NICE on Magadi etc, take Hassan highway till CR Patna go via Holenarasipur/KR Nagar/Hunsur.

You also get the best highway breakpoint on Hassan highway. But yes some diversions at CR Patna and Holenarasipur.

Re: Bangalore - Coorg : Route Queries

We are actually travelling from Nandi Hills to coorg. So probably route via CR Patna is faster. Could you please tell me how the road conditions are?

Coorg is a district.
1) If you are travelling to South Coorg (Gonikoppa, Kutta etc.), you might be better off taking Bellur Cross - Pandavapura - Srirangapatna - Hunsur - Gonikoppa.
2) If you are travelling to North Coorg (Somwarpete) you can take CR Patna - HN Pura route, where roads are 2L roads in decent condition AFAIK.
3) If you are travelling to Madikeri area, you can take 1 (Hunsur - Madikeri) OR 2 (Somwarpete - Madikeri) where again roads are not an issue and can be driven in any car.

To add to @Prorj Devanahalli-Doddaballpur-Dobbaspet-Guddemaranahalli is the option to hit Hassan highway.

Travelling to Virajpet from Bangalore. Is this route that you have mentioned in good condition throughout? I know the road is largely excellent till Pandavapura, having recently used this to go to Mysore.

Also, is one required to go through Srirangapatna, or is there a direct road to Hunsur from Pandavapura?

You will need to cross Srirangpatna, take KRS route to Yelawala, post which you can take Hunsur - Virajpete. Route is mostly good with a few rough sections when you get closer to Hunsur.
