Hey! Kolhapur-Pune may be a little uneven, but it is definitely far from being narrow or broken! I did this stretch about 15 days back, and even in a Tata Nano, it wasn't bad at all!

If you are referring to the NH4 section,I dont think it is narrow and broken by any stretch of imagination.Yes there is some widening work in progress but the roads are definitely very good.

Re: Advise needed on Rajasthan road trip from Bangalore

I will be doing a drive in May. Any inputs on the google maps suggested route via Hyderabad - Akola - Indore - Bhilwara - Jaipur. Whats this route like?

I have to somehow reach Jaipur on the second day and catch a flight back.

I would suggest :
Hyderabad-Solapur-Aurangabad-Dhule-Indore bypass (Pithampur) - Lebad - Ratlam - Neemuch - Chittorh - Jaipur

Is this a toll road all the way? Surface quality? Traffic?

Any highlights about this route after hyderabad that you could talk about?

What would be the ideal pit stop point?

In fact I would suggest a better option. A bit longer though.

Hyderabad-Solapur-Baramati-Nagar-Malegaon-Dhule-Indore bypass (Pithampur) - Lebad - Ratlam - Chittorh - Jaipur.

This also gives an option to visit Shirdi on the way. Would rather avoid locations around Beed. Check with @Ashish Pallod more details.

Sorry forgot to add road conditions:

- Beyond Indore its 4 lane all the way
- Hyd - Baramati is NH9. Not a 4 lane.
- Baramati-Nagar-Malegon : Decent road and this goes via Shirdi

It is a 4-laned road from Dhule onwards, barring a small stretch of around 30 kms between Nimbahera & Chittorgarh.

You do not touch Indore, but you are close to Indore. Maybe you can consider halting there on day 1. Or Dhule before that.

Re: Advise needed on Rajasthan road trip from Bangalore

I did the Hyd-Jaipur in Dec 2012 and had typed a trip report as well. But somehow it seems that it is not posted. Luckily, I save it in my drafts and I am pasting it below. Feel free to ping me for any queries.

I did a Hyd-Jaipur-Udaipur-Hyd trip last week. Below is a quick update on road conditions for our future reference.

Many thanks to Gaurav(gauravdgr8) and Ranjit(ranjitp1) for all the help in shaping up my itinerary and some invaluable suggestions.

Car: Ford Classic Titanium Diesel 4000+ kms on odo, 1st Service Done.
Passengers: Self, Wifey, 6 yr old son, 2 yr old son (in car seat)

I had got a Headrest mounted DVD fitted (WorldTech) which costed me 10k before the trip so that the kids are occupied with cartoons for sometime..

Route taken and drive times are below:

21st Dec:
Gachibowli-Tuljapur: 2:15pm to 7:15pm (5hrs) Road conditions are avg and discussed in many threads till Naldurg. From Naldurg to Tuljapur is excellent 2 lane road.

Stayed overnight at hotel Shivneri. Pathetic hotel and it was the only wrong decision in our entire trip.

22nd Dec:
Tuljapur-Ratlam: 7:00am to 10:00pm.

We reached Dhule at 4pm. The drive till there was very slow thanks to kids and multiple stops. The entire strech is in drivable condition and I am thinking probably this is the best route to Delhi till the work in other routes are completed as Dhule onwards it is 4 lane road.

There is a great food joint called Foodie (around 30kms before Manpur) where we had dinner. I certainly recommend this place. They are coming up with accommodations as well and will open in next 1-2 months.

Stayed at Ujala Palace in Ratlam. Great hotel and good value for money.

23rd Dec
Ratlam - Jaipur: 7:00am to 9:00pm

After we cross the MP border, the road is in pathetic state till Chittorgarh. The stretch needs a complete rework and sad to see that the road work is still not started. It took almost 1.5+ hrs to drive that 40 kms. This stretch was the worst in our entire trip.

We spent around 5 hrs in Chittor visiting the fort including bfast and lunch.

27th Dec:
Jaipur-Pushkar-Ajmer-Udaipur: 7:00am to 7:00pm

The road to Pushkar is great. The bypass to Pushkar road after getting off from the 4 lane road is in excellent condition.

As expected, the Ajmer had it's own traffic. We parked the car in the Railway Station and took Auto to Durgah.

For the benefit of veggies: There are 2 veggie restaurants outside the Ajmer Durgah which are quite crowded. We had lunch in one of them and like the food.

Ajmer to Nasirabad was uneventful 2 lane ok road.

Wanted to take the Beawar road but was suggested against it as there are ghats by some car drivers there. So didn't risk it with kids as Ranjit had also told me the same earlier.

30th Dec:
Udaipur - Aurangabad: 9:00am to 11:00pm

Reached Dhule by 6:30pm but lost around 2+ hrs in the traffic jams in the ghat after Dhule.

Stayed in Hotel Oberoi in Aurangabad. Excellent option for overnight stay. Completely renovated 3 months back. It's in Kranthi Chowk in front of BP gas station.

31st Dec
Aurangabad - Hyderabad: 9:00am - 8:00pm
Uneventful drive

Please feel free to ping me if you need any help in this routes...

In my opinion, making it to Jaipur on the second day and catching a flight back on the second day is simply too ambitious if not impractical and very tough.I suggest that you replan your itinerary to reach Jaipur on Day 3.

If you are really keen on reaching Jaipur on the second day,I suggest you go via Mumbai with some real hard and sleepless driving(not reccomended though)

Day1:Bangalore-Surat (approx 17hrs of drive)

Day 2:Surat-Jaipur:(Approx 15hrs of drive)

You wouldnt make it to Jaipur on day 2 via the Hyd route.

I cannot do this. I want to drive only when the sun is up. No driving at all at night or twilight. Twilight is most dangerous.

Guess I will have to take a day off from work. It is the safer thing to do.

Replanning your journey is the only way out and take the GQ and go.Straightforward and simple.Going via Hyderabad is going to be tough,as the 4 lane ends at Hyd and then only starts at Dhule, till then you would be negotiating bad roads intermittently and not so great stay facilities enroute.

Day 1: Bangalore-Bombay 14-15hrs

Day2:Bombay-Udaipur:13hrs

Day3:Udaipur-Jaipur:7-8hrs

And having said that, the route to Jaipur if taken via Mumbai/Pune is at least 300km longer.

But if there is anyway a halt planned, then I guess it may be worth while to drive via Mumbai also.

I suggest the following route -

Banglore - Belgaum-Kolhapur - Pune
Pune-Shirdi - Malegoan- Dhulia
Dhulia-Indore(Pithampur Choukdi)-Lebad-Ratlam-Jaora-Nimbaheda-Udaipur

The entire road is 4-laned except for the part between Shirdi and Malegoan.
Surface quality , pitstop availability, food water lodging everything is there and it has lesser traffic as well as bottlenecks compared to Mumbai-Gujrat. Atleast that has been my opionion.

Even HVK Sir has recommended it. that i think is the final word

Can I take this route as a 3 day road trip considering I drive only when there is daylight?
