re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

I'll be driving from Margao (Fatorda) to Pune (Deccan Gymkhana) via Ponda / Chorla / Belgavi on Wednesday 21 October and would appreciate if someone who has done the route recently could inform me of the tolls to be paid along the way.

My car is a Hyundai Verna SXSX, and I'll be starting around 5 a.m. and have estimated 8 hours on the road with two or three short halts of 10-15 minutes each. Is that a reasonable estimate?

There is no toll till you cross Belgaum. The first toll would be the one on NH4 after Belgaum. There are multiple posts on this, if you don't get it let me know.
I did Vasco-Pune via Panaji, Amona, Chorla in the first week of October.
8 hours should be comfortable based on the time and day you have planned for.

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Hi, I am planning a drive to Mangalore from Mumbai - for the Diwali holidays. The route I usually take is Mum > Hubli (on NH4) > exit towards Kalghatgi > Join NH66 (NH17) between Karwar and Gokarn and drive on NH66 (NH17) all the way.

Anyone drive through these roads recently? The NH4 road seems to be in good condition after the monsoons. Its the NH66 (NH17) I am not sure. How are the road conditions after the monsoons?

Please can anyone share some info in this regard.

I had travelled in the stretch between Gokarna and Mangalore last week. It is a mix of good and average stretches with work in progress at many places. This is the well-known route from Mumbai (Panvel highway).

@VaahanYogi - Thanks!

Actually, I have traveled till Belgaum (en-route to Goa) recently and the roads were great. The uncertain bit is between:
a) Hubli > Yellapur
b) Yellapur > Ankola
c) Ankola > Honnavar
d) Honnavar > Udupi

Any specific stretch that is bad/time consuming (speedo can't cross 10-20 etc.)?

Ankola-Honnavar-Udupi stretch is fairly good (say 80%). Even in the bad stretches, one can maintain 40+ speeds conveniently.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Hi,

I would be driving down to Goa during the diwali holidays. This will be my first really long drive and I was wondering if I could get any feedback on the route via Amboli (recent travellers). Planning to take that route as I will be staying in North Goa.

A recent trip by my colleague a month back confirms the Amboli road is in good shape. I myself intend to take that route coming 14th Nov. Me too will be staying at North Goa (Candolim).

EDIT: On my way to Goa, I would halt at Sai International for the breakfast. Any suggestions on a good place for lunch? (kids aged 6 & 3 so a decent place would be required)
And also please throw some light on good halting points for the return leg. I will stick to Pune-Kolhapur-Nipani-Amboli-Sawantwadi-Candolim route on both legs. Return would start only by 2 pm from Goa.

I generally have lunch in Goa, but here are few options en route.

1. Before Amboli ghat. Look for hotel on left side after crossing Amboli checkpost. This place used to be under Vitthal Kamat chain of hotels, now it's known as Valley view or something similar.
2. In Sawantwadi, near 'Modi Talav', there are few lunch options including fast food ones.

On return journey, you can again halt at Sai international. Look for service road exit between 10 to 11km mark from Kini toll-booth, cross NH4 under bridge, take left on service road to reach Sai international.

24 Hours Fuel station: Does anyone know fuel stations that are open for 24 hours on NH4 stretch between Kolhapur till Belgaum or Kittur? I searched on BPCL website, but it doesn't show any info other than facilities at that fuel station.

Thanks for the pointers

Regarding the 24 hours fuel, the COCO should operate 24 hours. There is a BPCL COCO as someone pointed out earlier in this thread. But I cannot be sure whether it operates 24 hours.

There is a BPCL COCO about 10-15 Kms before the Nipani naka turning. We tanked up there on the initial leg.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Goa trip coming up on 12-Nov. Since I am going to North Goa, I am thinking of taking the Amboli ghat route instead of my favorite Chorla ghat this time. I see 2 options on Google maps:

1. Sankeshwar - Gadhinglaj - Ajara: Did this route 3 years back. Hope its still doable with 2 kids (8yrs and 3yrs)?
2. Alternate shortcut that leaves Bangalore highway earlier and goes via Rashing - Uttur - Ardal. I was advised to avoid this route previously. Does anyone know if this route has improved, or should I stick with #1?

Finally, if going via Amboli ghat, there is a road marked as highway 180 which avoids Sawantwadi city and uses the Sawantwadi bypass.

Is this a good option or should I go through Sawantwadi?

Last year I took the Sankeshwar Gadhinglaj road and while it wasn't at the top of its condition it was doable. Keep within sane speed limits as in the ghat section there are a few big craters.

About the 24 hour open fuel station best to ask along the route as one goes to Goa. The attendants should have this information. Or else ask the truckers!

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Doing Thane - Goa later this week.

Departure date midnight of the 11th and will take the NH4 upto Nippani and then via Amboli ghat to Savantwadi onto south Goa ( I did the same route 5 years back to Baga) and was a nice experience.

Plan to take nap halts during the drive and take it easy and reach that Vittal Kamat point before the ghat in the morning for breakfast (2 kids aged 9 and 3 - debut drive for my little one) and then in time for check in at lunch time in Goa.

Will keep you guys posted on another thread about the drive after I complete it.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine has just driven down from Bombay to Goa in a "City". On my recommendation he used the Chorla Ghat and reports that the road is in excellent condition.
He took a total of 10 hours from Lokhandwala (Andheri) to Candolim including a couple of stops for refuelling, breakfast etc.
He usually uses the Amboli Ghat and it took a bit of convincing for him to use the Chorla road and now he is really happy with the Chorla road and will be returning the same way.

Regards,
SS

Yesterday I took Chorla ghat route to reach Palolem from Pune. The road is in excellent condition.

There is a nice place called Delta to take a tea break in Chorla ghat. Has clean restrooms and nice tea and food too.

There was lot of heavy vehicle traffic though. Mostly the trucks carrying mining equipment and material. But I bet Amboli route has more traffic.

Regards,
KT
