Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

I came to Goa yesterday via Anuskura Ghat. The road up to the ghat and a little way beyond is good; after that it gets pretty bad. You need to be careful on the Mumbai-Goa highway. Plenty of potholes and water accumulation on the road at some places. Even at places where they have done patchwork pothole repairs, it is not flat but in the shape of a mound.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Took the Chorla route yesterday.

The Karnataka stretch of Chorla is extremely inconsistent. The road condition varies drastically from:

Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries-pxl_20240910_080036709.jpg

to:

Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries-pxl_20240910_080110655.jpg

within just a few meters. You need to stay alert at all times - brakes and suspension will get a good workout. Overall, the KA section is strictly average.

However, once you cross into Goa, the road is smooth and consistent throughout. No complaints—just a smooth, enjoyable drive.

I left Belgaum (new ITC) at noon and reached South Goa (Benaulim) by 4:00 PM, including a 45-minute lunch stop.

Hope this helps!

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

I decided to take the Amboli on the way back.

Big mistake—the ghat and the entire stretch from the time you leave NH66 are in terrible condition.

Based on the current road conditions, I’d recommend taking either Anuskura or Chorla.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Thanks for the update Amogh! How is the Satara to Karad to Kolhapur road condition?
I am surprised that Amboli is in poor condition even after a year of ongoing road works.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Thanks a lot for the updates Amogh!
Even I will be travelling to Goa (Dudhsagar falls) on this 21st Sept.
So would really like to get an update on Pune - Satara - Karad - Kolhapur - Belgaum road conditions?
(Will take Chorla ghat route if Pune - Belgaum is bearable)

Pune to Belgaum is an average drive with plenty of diversions. The quality of the diversions is inconsistent, and many are poorly designed.

The Pune-Satara stretch is the only bearable part of the journey. From Satara onwards, it's a real test of patience.

For context, it took me 6 hours of driving (6 hours and 50 minutes total) to reach Belgaum from Pune. There were no traffic jams, just painfully slow-moving traffic due to the numerous diversions and two-wheelers.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Planning to drive Pune to Goa end of September with my wife. The consensus seems to be Pune- Karad - Anskura - Rajapur - Oni - south Goa. Is that correct?

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Returned from Goa via Anuskura Ghat. Portions of the Anuskura Ghat road up to Oni have been resurfaced, but there are still portions that are potholed, though manageable. At the present time, this seems to be the best route.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Hi all. I have to go to Vengurla next week. Having done Anuskura, Amba and NH66 routes multiple times I wanted to try the Gaganbawda and Phondaghat/Radhanagari routes. Gaganbawda route was apparently closed for roadworks a few months back.

Any updates on these routes would be appreciated. Broken or bad roads are fine as I’ll be riding my BMW 1200GSA motorcycle. Just need a change of scenery.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Just back from Goa. I took my usual route which is Pune - Nipani - Uttur - Ajara - Amboli - Sawantwadi - Goa.

Road from Pune to Nipani (Pune Bangalore highway) is under construction with lots of diversions.

To my surprise road from Nipani to Sawantwadi and thereafter was very good.

Does that mean that all the construction work between Ajra and Amboli is completed? That's good to hear.

Coming from Goa, once you take the right turn at Banda from NH 66 towards Kolhapur, the first 45-60 minutes or so till you reach the Amboli waterfall is bad. Beyond that though, the road is in great shape all the way till Nipani. I don't remember seeing any construction happening there, and in fact the roads around Ajra were some of the best roads in my entire Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai drive. Although its an undivided highway, it has almost three lane width allowing easy overtaking, coupled with excellent surface and minimal traffic.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Did the trip from Mumbai to South Goa on 11 Sept 2024. Took the route from Mumbai-Pune-Karad-Anuskura-Oni-NH66 to enter Goa and proceed southwards. The entire stretch of the highway is good. Few bad patches upon entering Karad. Once you take the right from Karad towards Anuskura, the road is great with beautiful scenery. Few unmarked rumblers to be watched out for. The Ghat section is good apart from being mostly narrow, so please drive at a speed in which you are in control. There is a vegetable market near Pancha where you might encounter some delays. The Airtel and Vodafone network is quite patchy so download the offline maps.

Once you hit NH66 near Oni, the road is mostly good with wide open stretches, gentle curves and hardly any traffic.
15 km short of Banda you can expect potholes and uneven tarmac.

On the way back from Goa - Mumbai, on 16 Sept, I felt a little adventurous and decided to take the Amboli ghat. A big mistake where the roads were bad till Amboli. Also the route was packed with traffic, albeit moving. This might be because the Amboli ghat is the most frequent and popular route to access Goa.

After Amboli, the road is great till NH48. The NH48 stretch in Karnataka is still under construction with many diversions, potholes and speed breakers.
All in all I would recommend to use the Anuskura ghat.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Heading to Goa this weekend.
Which is the best route from the two below?

Pune - Nipani - Uttur - Ajara - Amboli - Sawantwadi - Goa
Pune-Karad-Anuskura-Oni-NH66 to enter Goa

I would recommend the latter.
