Hi, sorry I missed this message.

We didn’t end up taking the Radhanagari route thanks to the just-in-time update given by @Darkcloud.

We eventually traveled the usual route via Amboli - Ajra - Gargoti - Kolhapur.

I think @Darkcloud also traversed the Radhanagari route on a bike, and had advised against it.

I would recommend the Karad-Anuskura-Oni route if travelling to North Goa, or the Dandeli - Anshi - Sadashivgarh - Canacona route if travelling to South Goa from Kolhapur.

Cheers,

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

So guys we had completed our Pune- South Goa-Pune trip recently:

1. Pune-Karad: Started at 4.12AM from PCMC reached just before 7am at Karad (with one 10 minutes break in between). Road were okish with some diversions.
2. Karad- Oni: Absolutely lovely roads with well marked lanes. The traffic in the morning was sparse and we could progress at a steady pace. We stopped at Anuskura ghat to have our breakfast (home made) and had a lovely family time. Reached Oni around 10am.
3. Oni-Goa: Well paved concrete roads and no traffic at all. We reached Margao around 1PM and had a great lunch at peppers.

Finally we checked in to our south goa hotel at 2.30PM.

I was expecting to check-in around 4PM but we made it well before time, thanks to low density of traffic in morning hours.

Coming to our ride, Hycross performed flawlessly all around. The ride was comfortable enough to not feel any fatigue after reaching goa. The return was all along same route, we choose to stay in karad because we started at around 2PM from South goa.

I recommend to use the Karad-Anuskura route for Pune and Mumbai guys.

Quick question for the folks who took Anuskura-Oni route. Post Anuskura, did you join Oni via Saundal/Vatul ? Cause maps is telling me to skip Oni and join Kharepatan/Sambhajinagar post Anuskura.

Don't go by Google Maps suggestion (Kharepatan). Stick to joining NH66 via Saundal-Oni.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

I did a solo Bangalore to Pune and back this week. Started from JP Nagar 7th phase, Bangalore on Sunday 25th November at 4:30AM and reached Hinjewadi at 5PM. Stuck to NH48. Deviations were not a big concern, may be it was just the timing. Service roads were generally in good condition. There was heavy traffic headed back to Pune post elections and lost some time in this traffic. Breakfast, Lunch and fuel were the only breaks.

On return started from Hinjewadi, Pune on Thursday 28th November at 4:30AM. And reached JP Nagar 7th Phase, Bangalore at 4:30PM. Again, breakfast, lunch and fuel were the only stops.

Its a stress free drive, except while entering Pune or Bangalore. Was able to stay cruise control for decent intervals.

IMHO,
Since you are planning to start early from Pune, Karad traffic is not an issue for you. I traveled till Mollem from Pune just last 2 weeks ago and it took me an hour extra than what it used to take earlier. Worst stretch on this route is Kagal to Hattaragi, you end up using service roads for 80+% of the route. Belgavi to Khanapur is smooth concrete road, I would recommend not going till Ramnagar but go via Bhimgad sanctuary, road is manageable.

Since you are going to south Goa, all other routes may not save you much time since you would end up crossing Goa (Which is much better nowadays than what it used to be but still not smooth sailing in places like Mapusa, Verna), also note there is weird speed limits on the NH66 in Goa (As low as 40 kmph on some stretches and its enforced)

In theory Anuskura is still the best way to reach Goa from Pune, but in practice if you start early road works between Kolhapur to Belagavi is not that bad, since most of the people heading south end up avoiding this route.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

Hi guys I’m seeing that everyone is either speaking of the route via Anuskura or Kolhapur or Belgaum. I was wondering if anyone has done the route from Pune-Mahabaleshwar-Mahad-Chiplun, alternatively Umbraj-Patan l-Chiplun and onwards to Goa. Would love to hear how the road conditions and the drive would be. Would one get stuck in the new Mumbai Goa hwy being built?

I did this route about 3 weeks ago. Belgaum to Khanapur is smooth 4 laned concrete road. After Khanapur, I would suggest taking Bhimgad Sanctuary road since RamNagar to Anmod is under construction.
Anmod ghat is in good condition with occasional rough patches.

Umbraj - Patan - Chiplun is doable, though Kumbharli ghat is rarely in the best of the conditions. Also you end up crossing Chiplun traffic and then Sangameshwar to Lanja section which is under progress and no where close to be ready. Umbraj to Karad is just 20 odd KMs to go to Anuskura, only bottleneck on this route is Karad traffic itself and that can be managed if you start early.

Challenge with Pune - M'shwar - Poladpur - Goa route is that you end up crossing two major ghat sections in Maharashtra, Pasarani, then crossing Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar traffic, paying tolls at both the corporations and then descending longest ghat section of Maharashtra Ambenali Ghat (30+ kms). Other challenges of crossing Chiplun, Sangameshwar and Lanja also apply on top of ghat sections. So road condition aside, though picturesque, this is not practical as compared to other options.

Excellent route all through. Only one slightly rough small patch(~1km) between Anuskura and Oni.
Between Anuskura and Kharepatan, G maps, by default, does not route through Oni. It routes via Kelavali. But via Oni, you get more of NH66 hence I preferred that.
Pune - Karad - only a couple of diversions after Satara, the main big one in Karad itself.
Other than that, it's probably the best route if winding ghat roads of Anuskura, of good quality and less traffic though, is not an issue for you.

Just used this route, it was a great one! Thank you so much.

Barring a couple of small patches, was super smooth.

While perfect the route is perfect for North Goa (right down to to Panjim), if heading further south, I would suggest evaluating other options as the traffic between Cancona and Panjim is horrible on NH-66.

Re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

I drove from North Goa to Navi Mumbai via the NH66-Anuskura Ghat-Karad-Pune-Expressway route on Saturday.

Overall, this route is only 58 kms longer than the direct North Goa-Navi Mumbai route via NH66. However, there is one reason I would recommend the NH66 option to Mumbai folks, and that is the chances of traffic jams on Expressway or between Pune-Karad during the Christmas-New Year week.

I counted a total of 7 diversions between Karad and Satara and a further 4 (or maybe 5) diversions between Satara and Pune. Not to mention the huge bottleneck in Pune itself. The traffic is on the higher side on NH48, especially truck traffic and this is a recipe for major traffic jams on diversions and toll plazas during the Christmas week when many people would be travelling to and from Goa. If one can avoid the bad stretches of NH66 by taking detours, this could be the better option for Mumbai folks.

I recollect that I got stuck 8 years ago on NH48 while returning from Goa after the new year, and I had a companion who had to be dropped at Pune airport. Inspite of taking an adequate buffer margin of 3-4 hours, I dropped him 15 minutes before departure time at the airport. Over the years, I was happy to see that NH48 had become a breeze but now things have gone back to square one over the last 2 years.
