Hi!
Forgot to rate the roads. Here I go...

Belgaum - Khanapur : 5/10
Khanapur - Ramnagar : 3/10
Ramnagar - 15kms further after taking right at Ramnagar: 3/10
Rest of the road till Arossim, South Goa : 7/10

Please note that the benchmark i.e. 10/10 goes to Mumbai- Pune expressway! So the road's rating given accordingly.

Regards

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

friends, am going to go to goa on 2nd Nov.

any idea of the nipani-uttur-ajra road?

@drivealot, 2 questions.

1. why 7/10 for Pune-Nipani (and even 6.5 for Nipani-Sankeshwar)? this is really worrying. is it the wait at the tolls? or 6-laning work on the pune-satara sector?

2. Sawantwadi to Panaji should take 1.5 hrs, and not 3 hours as mentioned by your friend. may be they had a break?

@omar1310,

how would you rate Pune-Belgaum? so that i get a better reference point

HI MINARDI,
almost ready to leave for goa. .
1) you are right . Its the time taken @ tolls & the 6laning work
2) I spoke to my friend again last night . He said there is road work going on @ sawantwadi and some bad stretches of road there. ( few Km's) He took a 20 min break there. thats all. hence driving time is 2hrs 40mins due to slow moving traffic also due to diwali.
Cheers

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

I am back in Pune after my trip to Goa.
Did Pune --> Belgaum bypass --> Bauxite Road -->Amboli --> Sawantwadi -->Banda -> Baga on 22 October.

Road condition:
Pune to Kolhapur: decent.
Kolhapur - Belgaum: Excellent
Belgaum bypass - Bauxite Road - Very bad.
Further road till Amboli ghat - Average
Amboli ghat: Good
Further till Sawantwadi: Average
Sawantwadi to Banda: Very Bad
Banda to Baga: Very Good.

Please avoid the Bauxite road. I went through this road reading earlier posts which indicated that it is better to drive the extra distance and avoid routes via Ajra.
I learnt after return journey that Ajra is a better option (less distance and overall better roads).
It is pointless to go till Belgaum. Route via Molem may be good, but that add a lot more KM compared to route via Ajra. It did not make sense for me so I avoided that one.

Return journey on 26 October.
Colva -->Banda --> Very good
Banda --> Sawantwadi --> Very bad
Sawantwadi --> Amboli ghat --> Good in the ghats. Decent overall.
Amboli --> Ajra: Decent
Ajra -->Gadhinglaj: Bad
Gadhinglaj --> NH4: Average
NH4: Very good

I will upload a few photos of the Bauxite road in day or two. Please avoid that route if you are coming from Mumbai/ Pune

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

My two bits as well. Just returned a day before Diwali from Goa. Took Mumbai-Pune xpway -> NH4 till Sankeshwar -> Sankeshwar-Gadhinglaj-Amboli-Sawantwadi route -> NH17 till Panjim.

Xpway, NH4 were no brainers. The Sankeshwar-Gadhinglaj road is smooth except for a few spots where patchwork is underway so should keep getting better. Gadhinglaj - Amboli was quite smooth and the amboli ghat route is good except for a couple of places where landslides would have occurred some time back. Road from Sawantwadi (NH17) is good till about 2 kms before the Goa border. Post that Goa roads are as smooth as their beaches.

^They stopped us and did a cursory check of the boot. Since we don't drink, I told them so and he stopped looking.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the Belgaum bypass road (Bauxite road) as promised. Very bad road conditions.

re: Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Goa : Route Queries

May be a bit off topic but wish to know the documents one needs to carry when travelling between states. Do we have to carry these documents in original ?
1. R.C. book
2. Insurance Papers
3. Puc Certificate
4. Driving Licence

Any thing else apart than these.

Yes you need to carry the originals,but carry a xerox copy set as well and show the cops only the copy first.only if they insist on the originals then show it to them.reason cops have a very uncanny way of holding onto the originals and then bargaining for money.

Thanks ,for the update . Will be leaving for South Goa (Palolem beach) on 14 Nov.
After Omar update now i am in double mind should i really take the Nh4A from Belgaum.
The Sankeshwar-Gadhinglaj route would be better it seems as Buz Mentioned.
