I am right now in Gangtok and is in one budget hotel, since I will be spending a couple of days just running about trying to secure permits to N Sikkim - the chances of getting those of course are quite remote, otherwise will head off to W Sikkim.

All through there are huge number of resorts and hotels both in Gangtok and in Bagdogra/Siliguri and they are right on the main highway.

Gangtok has become incredibly congested and parking is a big problem and be careful not to park on the wrong side as the traffice police is very
particular about that. As said huge number of hotels of all category.

Off topic: For update of NH34, it cannot be more better. Started for overnight journey at 830 pm and followed the old route, i.e, Barasat-Krishanager-Berhampur-Moregram. And from Moregram in fact till Gazole it is perfect, there are zero [yes 0!!] potholes or anything. May be election effect but whatever, one has to drive to believe, road all marked up and so perfect. After Gazole all through to Siliguri is very good too, only patchwork seen in places and a few gaddas. I could maintain high speed, quite a few places 100-130 kph was the speed for extended periods of time.

But whatever one has to do the night journey, as otherwise easily these roads are crowded big time - the village houses, shops are right till the road, and this journey should only be done overnight, for a day journey easily add another 2-3 hours, plus fatigue.

Reached Siliguri in at 645 am [around 10 hrs - 9hrs actual +1 hr total break] and as such decided to push myself till Gangtok and not stop at my cousin sister's house in Siliguri. REached Gangtok at aroun 10:30 am with a break in between.

Thanks ADC,

Thats great news, I always preferred driving thru NH34
though its bit crowded.I might not be driving till gangtok
might take diversion on the way , still nothing is fixed.
Just 2 days back one biker went through NH34 , he said
its butter smooth all the way .

Anyway if you come accross any decent hotel on the
way down just advise me.

Bythe way do you have driving log for this Trip from
Kolkata to Gangtok ?

Cheers

There are a number of resorts near the Rumtek Monastery. Most of them are quite VFM and offer spectacular views.

Although bear in mind that Rumtek is about 20-24 Kms from Gangtok and the last time I went there the roads from Gangtok to Rumtek were in a miserable condition.

Even if you don't stay there, Rumtek's still definitely worth a visit !

There are couple of good hotels in MG Marg, in Gangtok and I saw couple of resorts which are far away from the Gangtok city.

Thanks Gents,

my preference will staying out as far as from the city of Gangtok,
and crowd. Rumtek is a nice place, I donot mind detouring a bit
to find the right place.

Cheers

I stayed at Hotel Shangrila. It is fine and in the middle of Gangtok. Nothing great about it except that it was a new construction at that time about 5 years back.

Stayed at Chumbi Residency on Tibet road (just off MG road) about a year ago. Courteous staff, nice rooms. A bit on the pricier side though.

There's one hotel called Netuk House on tibet road.. Its a family managed hotel and I've heard only good about them.. But somehow I could not stay over there.. I had stayed at Mintokling Guest house, even thats a decent place..

If you are going to Darjeeling, I would have suggested you Cochrane Place which is at Kurseuong, about 45 mins from Darjeeling City. That place is amazing..

After rain it will be the same again :( There is some area in this road where after every rain the road will become bad shape due to the loose soil.
