This is definitely do-able. Once you are in Ooty, the route to Mysore is:

Gudalur-Bandipur-Gundlupet-Nanjangud-Mysore.

While coming you dont have to come via Ooty.

You can do :

Mysore-Chamarajanagar-Sathyamangalam-Ooty. (Via Dimbam)

Now Mysore-Chamarajanagar has two options.

1. Mysore-Nanjangud-Chamarajanagar
2. Mysore T-Narasipura-Chamarajanagar

(As per my views the route via Nanjangud should be better. (However it would be better to check with others for latest road conditions).

You have many options for budget hotels. Mysore has a Ginger which is good. But rooms are a bit small. However overall its a good place.

Re: Coimbatore to Mysore - Via Chamraj nagar or Bandipur?

Hello

I plan to travel Coimbatore - Mysore this weekend. Any ideas about latest road conditions for

1. Coimbatore - Ooty - Masinagudi - Mysore
2. Coimbatore - Sathyamangalam - Chamrajnagar - Nanjagod - Mysore

I plan to leave coimbatore after work in the evening. Will be self driven. Any issues with a late evening drive? Are there any check posts on the way that close at night. Masinagudi ?

All help and guidance appreciated

Definitely I would say the second option is far better as it saves you the hassle of driving through traffic congested Ooty/Conoor. But I don't know how the situation pans out at
night. I wont recommend nigh driving. But others would know better.

If driving at night, Option (1) may not be possible at all because of the night traffic ban in the Bandipur Sanctuary. The Masinagudi checkpost closes slightly earlier than most others - they are very reluctant to let you into the forest after 8/8:30 PM. (The Gudalur entry point is OK, they allow vehicles upto 9PM)

The Sathyamangalam route isn't all that deserted during nights - you do find quite a bit of truck traffic. But the density would be far less that what you find on most other National highways. Drive carefully, there is some chance of encountering wildlife in the forest /ghats stretch between Bannari and Hasanur. (The occasional elephant / gaur / deer)

It's been more than three months since I'm planning this journey, but couldn't get materialise due to my job constraints.

Now decided as this weekend outing.

The trip planned is as follows:-

1.Day one
leave from Coimbatore to Ooty by car. Sight seeing/ night halt at Ooty

2.Day two
Leave early morning for Mysore.Sight seeing/ night halt at Mysore.

3.Day Three
Cover the left over places .Depart for Coimbatore post lunch

Route:-
Coimbatore - Ooty -Mysore-Nanjangud-Chamarajanagar-Coimbatore

Please advice on must-see places and the route to follow(road conditions)

thanks

Yes. You can get quite many feedbacks.

Mysore-Nanjangud : Decent NH212 but has traffic
Nanjangud-Chamarajagar : A bit of a rough road but surely doable.
Chamarajanagar-Sathy-CBE : Need I say anything? NH209; Very good and beautiful to drive. In fact its the favourite road of many!

Arun - the only stretch I am not aware is the Nanjangud - Chamrajnagar , about 40 KM.

Else the rest of the way is beautiful. I came to Bangalore last weekend from Coimbatore and this road is a joy to drive.

Mysore - Nanjagod - Chamrajnagar- Sathyamangalam - Coimbatore

Any timing restrictions on this route? Especially after 6:00 PM. My return journey would be from Coimbatore. We are planning to start by 4-5:00 PM, let me know if a early start is required.

No restrictions. But do try to cross Dimbam ghats before it gets dark.

Nijaguna residency. Just before you reach Ch.nagar. On the right side around a 100mtrs off the main road. Good place to stop and relax. Quality is nothing great. But decent enough and is clean and has decent rest rooms.

Yes Nijaguna at Chamarajanagar. If you start from CBE it comes quite early for a stop. And beyond that there is hardly any place.
