Which is the best place in India to find Snow in September?

Hey everyone,

Need a favor. Being in Bangalore, we are starved of snow capped mountains. My 5 year old daughter is pestering me for quite some time to take me to some place where there is snow (She is inspired by all the cartoons to make a snowman ..

I have some free time in September and am searching for suitable places within India. Still cant afford a trip to Switzerland ).

So, can you all please suggest a suitable place/places for a week long vacation?.. Mostly Himachal pradesh comes to mind (Kulu and Manali). Is this the right time to go?.. If not, which other place do you suggest and what can be the possible iterinary.

I know I have asked too many questions. Appreciate greatly if the enthusiastic travelers can help me in deciding.

Thanks
Shankar

I have the same problem as you do. Only that my daughter will turn 4 by the end of this month. She wants me to take her to "ice gudda" :-)

Thanks for this thread

Thanks shankaranand for this thread. This has been engaging me as my 7 year old is keen to experience snow.

Thanks sanagg1 for the pointers. I shall look for further info on the places mentioned.

Though the peaks near Rohtang pass will have some remnants of snow in September, Manali receives its snow only in October more towards mid to end Oct.

Cheers,

Drive to Leh from Manali. Rohtang will have some snow but the other "Las", Khardung, Barlachla, Changla, Tanglangla etc., will have ample snow.. And you'll get to view and enjoy a scenery that is awesome..

No snow anywhere in September. The only chance is if there is early snow in Rohtang (last year there was one spell of snow in September 2nd week), but even such snow melts in 2-3 days. If you want to definitely see snow, you can try in October - Rohtang again.

Tawang does not see snow even in December, but Se La which is on the way from Bomdila does.

Gulmarg gets snow along with Simla, Manali and Auli in end of December only.

You will not be able to touch snow in September. But you can see them far on top of the mountains if you make it to Rohtang in Sep.
Mid of Oct is when you can see few inches of snow at Rohtang. Again than depends.
The easiest option will be to reach Shimla in Dec.

This is how Rohtang looked in the third week of Sep 2007.

I knew I will get good information in the forum.!

Will probably postpone my travel to Early Jan. I dont think I can afford the end of december rates everywhere.

I went to Shimla in late Jan - early Feb timeframe (2008). There was ample snow for the kids to play. Since you will be travelling with kids, just visit Shimla, kulu, manali. It's beautiful during this time, rates are low and you can make enough snow men for an army.

Finding snow in shimla etc., in end of dec is dicey. Make it end of feb, and go to Manali, you will find tonnes of snow.

Read my earlier thread, when we went on a snow hunt....

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...la-manali.html

We chose December, and so as to be sure to play 0on snow, we went to Dalhousie, Simla and Manali - and got snow in all the places! This was during the period Dec 20-28.

At that time, you can also add Auli, Dhanaulti and Gulmarg to the list.

Perhaps you are thinking of 'Snow World' in Hyderabad. The snow there is more like shaved ice - the kind used to make 'ice golas' nothing like snow at all.

RFC probably uses the usual filmy fluff for snow.

Amazing - to find that there are a lot of guys who are pestered by kids to take them to snowy locales.

I have been to Shimla about 10 years back and briefly happened to see snow whilst on our way back to Delhi via road.

But this time around I would like to take my kid - irony is that dont know how much time it will take driving from Mumbai to Snowy Mountains - Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Shimla & Manali. Got a Indica Xeta!!!

On second thoughts how would taking a train be for the 3 of us (me, wife & kid), but it will not be at our convenience - that is stop and go when you want to Most importantly is it safe to drive those distances when there is just one to drive

We need to also keep in mind the holidays for kiddo, I believe holidays will be between October (Diwali) & December last week (Xmas)

Cheers
