The whole of South is going to be warm/hot in April/May.You would have to go North up the hills to experience some respite from the heatIn kerala and surroundings,the usual suspects are Munnar,Valparai.Thekkady,Ooty,Kodai,Wayanad,Coorg region.Its going to be hot in all these places:(If you are ok with warm weather,you can also check out the boat houses in Alleppey/Kumarakom stretch. Inspite of the weather all these places have their peak season in April/May since that is the time schools are closed/

I visted Vagamon during the Xmas break. Days were hot, but there was enough breeze to keep us fine. Night's were cool. April is going to be totally different.

Won't be as bad as Madras. We went to Munnar (which is at a higher altitude than Vagamon) in late April, mornings are great till about 10am. Late morning, early afternoons are definitely warm to hot. Also expect any place on a hill to be filled with traffic during summer holidays Kodai, Ooty have choc-a-bloc traffic in weekends, let alone summer holidays

I second Ranjit's idea of going north, would also suggest exploring North East.

From Madras it is Madras-Ulundurpet-Trichy-Dindigul-Theni-Kumili-Vagamon. Salem route is only when you are coming from Bangalore or Hyderabad.

Munnar any day.lot of places to cover. climate is better & Hotel/Resort/ Eating facilities much better.

Vagamon can be best for a day trip, Nothing special to see here.

Munnar gets my vote,better stay options and less warmer of the two.

Chennai-Ulundurpet-Dindigul-Theni-Bodi-Chinnakanal-Devikulam-Munnar

From Munnar you can drive via Thekkady-Peermade-Mundakkayam-Erumeli-Ranni-Pathanamthitta-Adoor-kayamkulam-karunagapally

One more vote for Munnar The attractions are spread out in 3-4 directions, so are the choices of stay. You have little more choice of how to roam in case of Munnar.

For Chennai to Vagamon 2 options

Chennai - Trichy - Dindigul - Theni - Kumily - Vagamon This is shortest but more of ghats.

Next is Chennai - Coimbatore - Muvattupuzha - Vagamon. This is longer and shorter ghat travel.

I'd prefer option 2 as I felt Kumily Theni stretch to be boring.

But then no idea of present road conditions for either of the routes.
