I second that, either you stay in Vizag (lots of choices for all budgets) or you stay in Bhubaneshwar/Cuttack/Puri.

Just for info, when are you planning the NH5 trip? And what are the places you're planning to visit. You can read my itinerary on an earlier thread in this same section.

Nagaveli is still one of the better off hotels in Srikakulam. But Srikakulam is closer to Vizag than Ichchapuram. So you might as well stay in some hotel like Meghalaya or so in Vizag.

If you want, Gopalpur is also a good option---it's an 8 km detour from NH5, off the Berhampur bypass.

Another option is Moti Hotel in Berhampur town---but you gotta drive through hectic traffic for about 7 to 8 kms.

I would suggest either stay at Berhampur or Gopalpur ( Distance between these 2 places is around 15 Kms) or stay in Vizag... I used to travel a lot in this route and do not remember any better place to stay overnight .. Meanwhile the distance between Ichhapuram and Berhampur is less than 30 Kms .. So why not spend the night @ Berhampur .. You will get an AC stay for around 500 - 700 Rs. I heard from my cousins that Nandan is a good place in Berhampur ...

If you want to stay near the beach then Gopalpur is the place ...

Well I did not stay at Sri Kakakulam, Nor I stayed
at Gopalpur ( Of course It was an option , in this case
I had to take a detour ) , Instead I found an Nice
OTDC Panthanivas Right on NH5 at Rambha , It's realy
good place to Stay, Charge only Rs.990/- for a clean
A/c Massive double bed room with a huge wash room
and a huge Chilka lake facing balcony, price included
complimentary breakfast . ample space of Parking car
with 24 hrs security .

Road Conditions update - 4/5 August 2009.

Vizag - Icchapuram - Good 4 Lanes NHAI Expressway.
Ichhapuram - Checkpost area Terrible Road Condition.
After Checkpost till Berhampore Bypass ( Gopalpur Xing ) - Good
but lot of Speed Breaker , Careful if Driving at Night .
Gopalpur X ing Till Rambha - Again Road Bad to Worse , some
place toiling through heavy red mud.
Rambha till Sunakhala - Good , single lane .
Sunakhala - Bhubaneswar - Cuttack - Bhadrak - Nice
4 lane Toll expressway by NHAI ,
Bhadrak - Baleswar - Moderate to Bad in some strectches,
lot of Diversions, you will be Zig-Zaging all way through
Baleswar, Baleswar to Kolkata - Again 4 lane Toll expressway
till Kolkata , ( Except Kolaghat Bridge approaches and bridge ) .
From Baleswar when you enter NH 60 , small portion is single
carriageway , becareful about numerous speed breakers at
this Strecth.

Time at avg. 80 kmph driving speed .
Vizag - Rambha - 5 Hours.
Rambha - Puri - 4 hours
Puri - Kolkata - 8 hours.

:thumbs up Congrats Capt Dey on the smart choice. But finding accomodation in either Rambha or Barkul (another Chilka facing resort of OTDC in the same vicinity) around the weekend isn't that easy. They mostly stay booked for weeks in advance.
