Ambala - G.T Road- Turn right at 12 km ( 100mtr before Toll Booth) - Banur - Kharar - Ropar - Kiratpur - Bilaspur - Mandi - kullu - Manali

Yes, it gets cold during evenings, carry warm clothes for kids

Places to see around manali - (100 - 150 kms)

Visit Tourism office near bus stand for information or their website.

Better to avoid Rohtang

a. This thread is not worth it if you had cared to google a bit.
b. Rohtang is a jam IF you don't time it. Leave before dawn and be back well in time.

But that is the main thing there really.

Places around -
Spend some time instead near Kullu rafting a bit or buying stuff.
Go to vasisht hot water springs

Rafting with kids will be a challange. Once i did the shivpuri stretch will them.
Plan to visit manikaran and around kullu.

Traffic in Madi

v&v, it is not only about avoiding the jam while going up. That I am sure you can avoid if you leave early. Just remember you still gave to get back to your Hotel. This my friend will be a problem. Until and unless you can cross Madi by 10/11 am on your way back.

We went on bikes from Manali to Rothang. On the way back even 2-wheelers had problem crossing Madi. Major Jam.

Not trying to discourage you, but this is reality. Cheers & Enjoy.

Actually I was planning to start by 5 in the morning and be back by 11.
Just keeping our program dynamic. Will decide once we reach there.
