Any recent experiences of flying Ethiopian and/or transiting through Addis Ababa? Have a Johannesburg trip coming up and options seem to be Emirates / Etihad & Ethiopian.

Emirates is a big draw because of the A380 on both legs :-).

Now I am going to try using Indigo to Sri Lanka

Why not Sri Lankan Airlines? We were on their Mumbai - Colombo service last year; very good experience.

I'm just checking, it seems only Sri Lankan has a direct service between Bangalore and Colombo; Indigo has a stop-over at Chennai.

As per the current Air Suvidha regulations, yes. Currently, any person above 5 years requires either a -ve RT-PCR test or a vaccination certificate. As 5 - 12 year kids are not eligible for vaccines in India, and so, a RT-PCR report is required for them. Most airlines do check it quite vigorously at the check-in counter.

We had to do the same for my friend's daughter (aged 9 years), when travelling back from Thailand.

Thank you Aiel,

Yes we also did the same. We did a express RTPCR for my 8 year daughter today and you rightly said the authorities at Singapore were strictly checking it.

Yes Srilankan also used to be a decent Airline. I used to use them long back. Havent flown them since the mid 2000’s though.

Air Vistara - I like everything about them except their so called Premium Economy (atleast as per my recent experience going to Chandigarh on holiday to Simla.) Best to fly either Economy or Business. Premium Economy is neither economical nor Premium. Its just the front few rows. Separated by a purple curtain from the Economy. No extra leg room. Still 3 abreast seating. Only some slight concessions like a printed menu and cloth napkins and decent cutlery. So on the way back I just paid and upgraded us to Business and yes, that was much more worth it for the comfort and space alone.

Chandigarh airport is a joy. I was very pleased to see it again after several years. And buying alcohol there is better than buying Duty Free. In fact buying alcohol anywhere else feels like Duty Free when compared with Bangalore prices!

One thing I want to consciously do from now on in this post pandemic era, is to try and use our Indian carriers as much as possible. At least wherever the flights are convenient and direct or with minimal stop overs. Because the money I pay will go to an Indian Airline Company. Trouble is that for most long haul International sectors all the Indian carriers only fly to and from Delhi and Mumbai and not Bangalore.

What is the deal with carrying sports equipment? It is listed as costing only 2500/- inr. The weight limit for sports gear is mentioned as 32kgs. Whereas 5kgs excess baggage costs 3500/- outbound and 50usd on return trip.

Thanks

Two of my colleagues flew Ethiopian via Addis Adaba last month. To Johannesburg. They did not have any bad experiences. It was a pleasant journey.

Qantas also flies direct. Bangalore-Sydney. 3-4 flights a week.

My apologies. I should have mentioned that I was talking about the direct flights taking off from Delhi specifically. Another reason for not mentioning Qantas is that it costs way more than the regular flights.

P.S I will definitely try one of Singapore Airlines/ Cathay Pacific/ Sri Lankan airlines before taking an Air India flight again. :p

Huge relief! Was useful earlier I guess but outlived it's utility.

While on this topic, why are Indian airports and airlines insisting on masking even now? It gets a bit ridiculous that you are unmasked everywhere else except when you get to the airport & fly!

Travelled recently and while smaller airports like Mangalore are a bit relaxed about this rule, it's almost militantly enforced in larger ones like Mumbai!

My wife returned from Cochin last Friday, and she was saying that there were no mandatory mask requirements - in the airport and also in-flight (SQ).

The mandatory mask rule has been removed by the Ministry. As per the new rules, wearing masks at Airports and in airplanes is only recommended, and not mandatory.

Mask not mandatory now, however, recommended when you are co-breathing with 100+ people in same space for hours.

It's like airline announcement... Seat belt sign is switched off, however, we recommend you to put seat belts while seated...

Not sure if this is relevant in this thread.

One of my relatives who is 82 years old has to travel alone on a flight from Mumbai to Hyderabad. Her walking is very wobbly & she uses a walking stick and she just about manages walking. But she cannot wheel the luggage and walk. Nor can she lift the luggage to place it on the luggage weighing scale in the checkin counter.

Couple of years back, when she traveled alone, she had called for a wheelchair from the airline & once you have a wheelchair, the attendant who brings the wheelchair wheeled the luggage also & took her right up to the checkin counter for checkin & other procedures also.

However, I recently heard that wheelchairs aren't easily supplied by airlines because of misuse. Is this true? If yes, do they atleast help with wheeling the luggage from outside right up to the checkin counter? What other alternatives are available.

This will be at Mumbai domestic airport. What is the current procedure to get a wheelchair/help?

Here you go.

Additionally, you can book the Meet and Greet facility that'll take care of everything, right from picking her up at the curb, to ensuring boarding. This is slightly pricey though (I think 5k).
