From Kollur, to join theerthally you can take Kollur-Hosnagara-Theerthally else if you are in Sringeri you can take, Sringeri-Agumbe-Theerthally-Shimoga route. As of now the above road condition in quite Ok, Doable by any sedan.

From Shimoga, take the road via Honnali to Harihar where you join NH4. The Shimoga-Harihar road sometimes gets roughed up during monsoons.

thank you hvkumar

i read your posts with interest elsewhere too.

can you guide me about some good joints along the nh4 upto haveri?

also the tirthahalli shimoga route is absolutely new to me would it be the best to take in monsoons especially would it be preferable over nh17.

On NH4 from Thane to Haveri:
Pune Expressway Food Malls before Khopoli
Hotel Sadanand (expensive, not fast food) on Pune bypass
Hotel Mahendra, in Satara bypass
Sai Resort, between Karad and Kolhapur
McDonald's after Kolhapur
Hotel Sankam Residency, just off NH4, at Belgaum

NH17 is lovely, except for some damaged road sections. I would still prefer NH17 one way, and return on the Tirthahalli route the return. The road via Tirthahalli is also very scenic and not to be missed out. From Udupi, you would drive up via Agumbe, Sringeri, Tirthahalli to Shimoga.
