There are two ways.

1. Via Madurai-Theni (NH220)
2. Or the standard NH47 through Kerala.

I think the Theni route is better, I did not try that (I had gone through Munnar).

Another option I would have suggested is to go via Waynad and then take the NH17. Not sure of the status around Calicut.

I dont think you need to go to Madurai. You can turn off at Dindigul bye-pass towards Vatlagundu > Theni > Kumily > Kottayam > Kumarakam. Should take about 11 hours on a good day.

Perfectly right as you say. Only issue is if you cannot do the whole, distance, in one shot, there is an option to break at Madurai.

Am planning a trip to kumarakom from bangalore.... have two routes in my mind.... Blore- Salem-Coimbatore-palakkad-Thrissur-Kumarakom(NH 47 route) and other is Blore-salem-dindigul-batlagundu-Theni-kottayam-kumarakom.

Which one would be the best.. i wanna do it on a single day, would be great if i get some information about the road conditions even...

If its a single day, my "logical guess" says take take the Theni route.
NH47 is in tatters. But please confirm with others.

I would recommend the Theni route. To give an idea of road conditions, I did Thekkady - Bangalore in 8 hours (including a lunch break) two weeks back. Going by this, you should be able to do Bangalore - Kumarakom in 11-12 hours depending on your driving traits!

PS - Rain has played havoc in Kerala over the last 10 days or so. Please check the latest road conditions before your journey.

By the way when are you planning to drive? If the date is not planned yet, I would say do it in Dec first week. Ideal time to get the best hotel deals and also away from Christmas/New Year and Diwali rush.

December, it tends to reduce. When I went in Dec 2009, there was no rain!
The weather was pleasant.

Beyond Salem I dont know of any place. I remember there was a mention of a place in Batlagundu in some other thread. I do not know of any place around Dindigul.

Or Best thing is pack something for lunch when you have your breakfast at Thoppur A2B.

@Praveen1

Veg or Non-veg?

Dindigul is quite famous for its mutton biriyanis. Try Venu's.

If veg, there aren't any prominent hotels. If you can push till Theni, you can try Madurai Meenakshi Bhavan(a good veg chain in Madurai) which is on the outskirts once you pass Theni town.

Bit of a stretch, but definitely possible for a lunch at Theni. 8-10 hours for 450Km drive on GQ most of the time.
