Friends,

Planning to make a trip to Thirunallar with family.
Can you please help me with the following?
1. Route information from Bangalore to Karaikal
2. Places to stay in Karaikal
3. Enroute veg Food joints

Options:
1) Bangalore-Hosur-Dharmapuri-Salem-Namakkal-Musiri-Trichy-Tanjore-Kumbakonam-Tirunallar
2) Bangalore-Hosur-Dharmapuri-Salem-Namakkal-Musiri-Trichy-Grand Anicut-Tiruvaiyar-Kumbakonam-Tirunallar
3) Bangalore-Hosur-Dharmapuri-Salem-Atthur-Perambalur-Ariyal-Tiruvaiyar-Kumbakonam-Tirunallar

Route 1 is the longest & Route 3 is the shortest but with bad stretches included.
I would suggest Route 2.
Instead of Karaikkal, you are better off staying in Kumbakonam, more choice for hotels & food(both veg & non-veg), PM me more details for hotel rooms, you can also cover more temples by staying in Kumbakonam like the Navagraha temples, Adi kumbeshwara temple, Sarangapani temple, Swamimalai muruga temple etc

What about Bangalore - Krishnagiri - TV Malai - Tirukoilur - Panruti - VAdalur - Chidambaram - Sirkazhi - Karaikal? Am sure it would be shorter than either of routes via Tanjaore or Kumbakonam.

This is perfect route to go karikal from bangalore and it can be done in 8-9 hrs with breakfast and lunch stop.

Thanks for the info. I am not planning for any other temples. Shortest route I prefer directly to Karaikal.

Hotel Parrys. Its on the main road itelf on left hand side while going toward Nagapattinam.
Tarrif is reasonable, I travel to kariakal every month once this is the best hotel in karikal. if you need heritage type hotel there is Nemrena hotel before karikal in Tranqabar.

Folks, I am driving down to Karaikal tomorrow from bangalore. Would like your advice on the route and directions.

I did search through various threads but either the information was old Or left me confused with too many route options

Please let me know which is the best route (in terms of current road conditions) and most importantly, the distance.

I would go with
Bangalore - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Vaniambadi - Tiruvannamalai (Tmalai)- Panruti - Neyveli - Chidambaram - Karaikal

The only reason of a detour to Vaniambadi is due to the very bad roads to Tmalai from Krishnagiri.

I havent done this route, but had plans of doing this on my return journey ( Mayiladuthurai to Bangalore ).

PM Ampere. He should certainly be able to guide with the right route.

How shorter would it be if I were to go straight to Tmalai from krishnagiri?

As in, Bangalore-hosur-kgiri-Tmalai-panruti-neyveli-chidambaram-karaikal

Veyron - The total distance should'nt exceed ~ 450 KM.
If you go straight to Tmalai, you should save about 50 KM's easily. I was searching for the threads that talk of reaching TMalai thru other roads, but unable to find it now. Shall send you the link no sooner i locate the thread.

My Summary is: TV Malai option is bad. NH66 never tends to improve.
I would suggest to go via Salem/Namakkal/Musiri-Trichy-Tanjore-Mayavaram-Karaikal.

The Namakkal-Musiri stretch has been patched up and but few small rough patches, its seems to be doing good. So no issues there as well. Tanjore-Trichy is 4L!

I would suggest you can travel to Vellore in the expressway and deviate towards tiruvanamalai and proceed Tiruvannamalai (Tmalai)- Panruti - Neyveli - Chidambaram - Karaikal as suggested by veyron head.

In case you wanna save toll than you can travel on Old madras road to Vellore in NH4 and proceed to Tiruvannamalai (Tmalai)- Panruti - Neyveli - Chidambaram - Karaikal

One can always continue onto Nagapattinam on NH67 from Thanjavur, then go to Karaikal. Alternatively go to Kumbakonam from Thanjavur and then take SH to Karaikal. The easiest way to find this road is to ask directons for Thirunageswaram Ragu temple, the temple is a small detour pn the road to Karaikal.

There is no point going via T.V.malai the road conditions are bad not only between Krishnagiri - T.V.malai it is bad between Panrutti and Chidambaram as well.
