Hi,

Am planning an 8 day trip in a Maruti Swift with a friend in late december/early january. One or two others may also join us. No infants or ladies. Two drivers both have done long distance driving.
Need advice on the following:

A. Delhi to Jabalpur:
a. Route Option 1: Delhi - Agra - Gwalior (NH 3) - Jhansi (NH 75)- Sagar - NH 12 intersection short of Narsimhapur (NH 26)- Jabalpur (NH 12).
b. Route Option 2: Same as above upto Jhansi - NH 12A via Tikamgarh and Damoh to Jabalpur

Option a. seems to be more popular (though longer) and Option b is shorter but road conditions are unknown. Questions:
1) Pls. recommend the better route.
2) Can either route get you to Jabalpur the same evening before sundown, assuming you leave Delhi early (~4 am).
3) Suggestions on food/facilities en route and accommodation in Sagar & Narsimhapur in case of option a. and Tikamgarh & Damoh in case of option b.
4) Plan is to spend the following day in Jabalpur. Want to definitely visit Bhedaghat (Marble Rocks) hopefully in the evening when its lit up. Any other must sees/dos in Jabalpur?

B. Jabalpur - Kanha
1) Route and estimated travel time ( NH 12 A to Mandla, MP SH to Kanha/Kisli seems one option)?
2) Accommodation in Kanha?
3) How many visits recommended into the park for wildlife/exploration? What time (morning/mid day/evening etc)?

C. Kanha - Ajanta :

a. The most popular route seems to be: Kanha- Seoni (MP SH)- Nagpur (NH 7)- Jalgaon (NH 6)- Ajanta (MH SH).

1) Is there a better route?
2) Is this do-able in a day?
3) Accommodation Suggestions in Ajanta?

D. Ajanta - Aurangabad - Ellora - Bombay
Plan: cover Ajanta in the morning, reach Aurangabad by lunch, visit Bibi Ka Maqbara and Aurangabad caves in the evening; night halt in Aurangabad. Next day: Visit Ellora in the morning. Start around noon for Bombay to hit Bandra by evening.

1) Suggestions needed on above plan?
2) Route from Ellora to Bombay: should we retrace highway back to Aurangabad, take the SH to Ahmednagar and NH 222 to Thane or Continue from Ahmednagar to Pune and take the expressway to Bombay?
3) Accomodation in Aurangabad and must sees/dos?

Delhi-Jabalpur:
Route via Sagar is the better of all the ba doptions. Road is abd between Gwalior and Jhansi and worsens as you go to Sagar. You can do it in a day assuming you leave Delhi early in the morning (~5 am).

Alternative is to go from Jhansi via Panna, but I think I will prefer to stick to your Route 1.

Sagar has a few hotels, better place to stay than Narasinghpur.

Bedghat is half hour drive from Jabalpur. You can also stay in Bedgehat in an excellent MPTDC hotel overlooking the Narmada River.

Your route to Kanha is correct via Mandla. Journey should take you 3 hours. Lot of places to stay in and around Kanha at various points like Kisli. Being the peak season, watch out jungle safaris are likely to be crowded (rationing of number of Gypsies allowed inside), and talk to your hotel guy as to his resources to arrange a trip.

You can drive Kanha-Ajanta in a day on the route you suggested. Road is excellent, on NH6 from Nagpur till Jalgaon. Alternative is to go via Wardha, but that route is more complex and will mean going via Aurangabad.

Ajanta has MTDC, but in case you do not get acco there, best is to stay at Aurangabad (100 kms more).

Direct route from Aurangabad is to go via Ellora, Vaijapur, Niphad and Nashik, which is teh shortest compared to the Ahmedanagar-Pune route. Now, Nashik-Thane-Bombay is a also a 4-lane road.

Thank you sir! As always, this solves most of my puzzles. Would you be able to comment on:

1. Estimated travel time from Delhi To Jabalpur via the Gwalior-Jhansi-Sagar route?

2. Ditto for travel time from Kanha to Ajanta via Seoni-Nagpur-Jalgaon.

3. I will go with your suggestion on the Aurangabad-Bombay route, would you know the approximate distance and travel time?

Thanks.

Delhi-Jabalpur

735 kms from Delhi to Suatala, where NH26 meets NH12.
Details:
Delhi-Agra 200 kms-Gwalior 115-Jhansi 120-Lalitpur 95-Sagar 110-Suatala 100-Shahpura 70-Turn off for Bedeghat 15-Bedeghat 5-Back to NH12 5-Jabalpur 25, totalling 860 kms.

Timing? I have driven Delhi-Sagar in 13 hours (with 1 hour halt), and from Sagar to Jabalpur in 6 hours (with fog slowing me down).

Kanha-Ajanta

Kanha-Nagpur 260 (5.30 hrs)-Amaravati 175 (3 hrs)-Akola 90 (2 hrs)-Khamgaon 55 (1 hrs)-Jalgaon 130 (2 hrs)-Ajanta 55 (1 hrs), totalling 765 kms, or almost 15 hours of driving time (not including breaks).

You can alternatively turn off Nh6 at Khamgaon and go via Buldhana to Ajanta. Khamgaon-Buldana 50-Ajanta 60, which means you can save 75 kms. However, the road from Buldhana may not be great.

Aurangabad-Bombay

Aurangabad-Vaijapur 110 kms-Yeola 30-Nipahad 45-Nashik 40-Thane 150-Bombay Chembur 20, totalling almost 400 kms, which can be easily done in 6-8 hours.
