Like said above NH4 would be best if you need to do higher speeds (4 lane toll highway).
Nh17 is the more scenic route, also probably the shorter but you will end up taking same or more time as its a 2 lane undivided highway (road surface is good though) with lots of twisties and villages en route.

Goa port is one of the major port shipping iron ore to China, so kumta-hubli lorry traffic will be there throughout day and night??

Then what is the alternative (is this kumta -hubli stretch too long?)

There are two options

Kumta - Ankola - NH63 - Hubli (This would be full of truck traffic)

Other option is

Kumta - Sirsi - Mundagod - Hubli
I am not aware of the road conditions.
This also has a ghat, but very scenic route full of trees and greenary.

Re: Road route to Mumbai

I am driving from Bangalore to Kannur and then on to Mumbai before finally heading off to Chandigarh in the 1st week of Feb 2012.

Any suggestions on the best route from Kannur to Mumbai? Stopping/ driving through Goa is not a priority. But good roads are essential.

Also the places which would be suitable for halting.

Thanks a lot.
