Hi Ladies / Gents.

Planning for a Driving Trip to Leh this summer ,
Any body willing to drive up ?
Raise your hands .

Cheers

Just when was thinking about something similar (A traveler group), you spoke my heart! My hand's up but I've got a few issues at hand.

1. Will my indica be good enough? All stock parts very well maintained but I'm kind of certain its not going to be able to stand the conditions, if someone disagrees me I'll be happy to strike this condition off and follow till I can.

2. Which month and how many days will be the trip? I need to arrange leave

3. My boy will be just more than 6 months (after march) though a lesser worry but still a condition I need signed off by you experienced guys.

If I have to cancel out I'm always ready for something which suites the above conditions anytime you plan something.

Looking for your thoughts Caprtain, take care.

@ Captain: I can join in from Delhi if you are game. Do keep me posted.

@captdey - I'm game. Will travel with my wife, share costs and logistics wherever applicable. But just one point.

My Verna and Arindam's Indica will probably not be able to take the strain of a Leh trip. From what I hear, up in the mountains the roads are bad and non-existent at some places.

A suggestion. SS-Traveller is also planning a Leh Trip in his Scorpio. Why dont we drive down to Delhi in our 3 cars, leave the Verna and Indica at SS' place, and travel to Leh in the 2 scorps?

Lets have meet sometime in January to talk over it.
I will be in Kolkata from 17th Jan till Feb 10th.

By the way What happened to Kolkata T-Bhp Members !!!
No body seems interested in winter Picnic / Get together,
Everybody seems to have gone Hibernation .

Cheers

I am game! Which month are you guys planning to travel? I will be returning to kolkata in Jan end. Let me know.

I believe September is the Ideal month for Leh-Ladakh Trip.
at least in 2009 it was.

Cheers

Hi,
Won't the Scorpios then start looking like the overcrowded taxis you see on NH34?

Yes, Sutripa has a point and its going to be difficult on a tough journey like that, after all it's no where near NH34, it's much tougher.

I came back from Vizag, thanks to Captain Dey for all the road updates and all of them were spot on, perfect!

I'll start sharing the journey soon. Thanks to all those who shared information and ideas it all came good on my trip.

Sounds like a good plan.

I had bought my safari for just one purpose......driving to Leh. Citeris Paribus want to do it this year. And driving in a convoy of 3-4 SUVs sound like a very good option.

We went in Sep 2009 but if you want to see snow on the mountainsand near the roads, the best time is June just after the roads open. May - August is the season and things might be a slightly expensive. September mid after is the off-season.

This is tempting. I will be back in India in July and if this trip is planned after that, I am game.

well i can tell you from the back of a bullet, i would much rather be on the highway to leh than nh34!!
september is iffy per the amount of snowfall and the passes can close even in the first week sometimes.
where the streams run off over the road there are often huge stones and a car with low clearance/low torque will have lots of problems.
just my 2 cents and, btw cap, i am in kolkata now too.

NH34:- As of beginning of Feb, surface was in very good condition (I was on a bike).

But it is still 2lane. Horribly crowded. Now the 5 axle trucks seem to be preferring it to the Panagar - Moregram route. Also, speed breakers have been removed, and replaced by steel barriers, effectively turning it into a single lane road. Anything stopping (most frequently, inconsiderately, and arrogantly - buses) and ALL traffic comes to a standstill. The advice to do NH34 at night still holds.

How are your Ladakh plans firming up?

Regards
Sutripta
