Chennai - Dhanushkodi - Kodaikanal - Chennai

Hi Ppl,

Am a Newbie here. Will be taking out my i10 eclipse chasing this pongal holidays, and also hope to spend about a day in the cold in Kodaikanal. This is planned as a family trip.

I know the route condition is very good from Chennai to Trichy. Would like to know the route status for Trichy - Pudukottai - Karaikudi - Rameshwaram - Madurai - Kodaikanal - Dindigul - Trichy.

Have clocked more than 8000ks on my car, mostly on highways, and especially the Chennai - Trichy GST road.

Any general pointers are also welcome, since this is my first loner than longish drive

Rameswaram-Madurai has some minor bad sections, nothing to worry about.
Madurai-Kodai-Dindigul is on great roads.
No idea about roads in Pudukottai and Karaikudi region, should be OK.

Hello hvkumar,

Have asked for the Pudukottai - Karaikudi road section to many. But am not getting much inputs. Have travelled by this route till Karaikudi many times. Roads are OK till Karaikudi. Am a little apprehensive about the strech after Karaikudi. Hope it all right!!

Anyway, thanks for those updates on the other road streches!

After Karaikudi, road should be good too via Devakottai and Devapattinam to Ramanathapuram. This road has been improved recently. In case you hear bad news about the road, you can even try detouring via the East Coast Road (newly laid) from Tiruvadanai via Tondi.

Am back from the trip! and here goes my updates on the roads.

Roads from chennai to Karaikudi were great. After karaikudi also It was pretty good, except for the construction going on in Trichy.And, just near Ramnad, after the new ECR ends, there where some huge potholes.. Hit one at good speed as it was in a turn, and had to change to my spare, as my left front tyre went flat, with a bent rim..

Nothing much to say about the roads from Ramshwaram to Madurai and on to Kodaikanal. But in the return direction, roads from dindigul to trichy are in worst shape. Construction of a highway is going on, which is unmarked with innumerable deviations... and the rest of the road is littered with potholes.. and I did this strech after 6. Could breathe with relief only after I hit the GST after Trichy

Sorry to bump up the old thread. I am planning to take my family to karaikudi for my friend's marriage. Could any of you can let me know a better route to karaikudi from chennai, as I have never went beyond trichy.

Chennai-Trichy-Pudukottai-Thirumayam-Karaikudi.

You may have some difficulty between Trichy-Pudukottai section. Any recent travelers can update this.

Go via the Madurai road, exit at Kottampatti (where the Nattam - Karaikudi road cuts the GQ) and go via Tirupattur. It helps stay longer on the four lane and you can also visit Pilliarpatti on the way if you need!
