Ya true places in MH are good to visit but for short weekend trips. Unless you do a full costal trip which you will enjoy only if you are a beach person.

Only Ooty and Kodai are worth the money to visit in Summer. You can enjoy cold climate only in those two places in south India. Dont even consider Mahabaleshwar/Matheran, the climate will be as hot as the plains. My friend couldnt do without AC room in Mahabaleshwar in May. But yes, they are good get aways for a week long trip if cool climate is not your intention.
The other great places are in North and North east!!

If you finally plan to goto Ooty, my suggestion would be not to stay in Ooty but in Conoor. Munnar would also be fun. Hope that is not too far from Hyderabad. (I thought you will be starting from HYD)

I have driven on most of these except Munnar, Kodai, Chennai and Hyderabad. The timings mentioned are drive timings and does not include stoppages. You can find similar timings in this forum.

So, here you go.

Hyderabad-Kurnool-Anantapur-Bangalore
- 560 KM
- 7 Hours
- NH7 (North-South Corridor)
- If started at 3 AM, you are in Bangalore outer 11 AM assuming one hour halt for breakfast.
- You could opt to have lunch at Bangalore and then proceed to Coorg.

Bangalore-Mysore-Hunsur-Madikeri(Coorg)
- 250 KM
- 4 Hours
- SH17, SH88
- You could stay in Coorg for 1-2 days. Home stays are better.
- Cofee plantations, trekking, waterfalls, rivers.

Madikeri-Sullya-Kasargod
- 150 KM
- 3 Hours
- SH88, SH56
- Beaches, fort, backwaters.

Kasargod-Kannur-Thalassery
- 130 KM
- 1.5 Hours
- NH17
- Beaches, backwaters, historical.
- http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...-kannur-3.html

Thalassery-Vadakara-Kozhikode-Kalpetta
- 140 KM
- 3 Hours
- NH17, NH212
- Forest, nature, tea plantations
- http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...wayanad-2.html

Kalpetta-Kozhikode-Kuttippuram-Edapal-Ponnani-Chavakkad-Kodungallur-Paravur-Ernakulam(Kochi)
- 300 KM
- 7 Hours
- NH212, NH17
- Port, sea islands, boats

Ernakulam-Muvattupuzha-Munnar
- 130 KM
- 4 Hours
- Hill station
- http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...-munnar-6.html
- http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...-munnar-2.html

Munnar-Poopara-Bodinayakkanur-Theni-Vathalagundu-Kodaikanal
- 160 KM
- 4 Hours
- Hill station
- http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...end-kodai.html

Kodaikanal-Vattalakunud-Dindigul-Trichy-Chennai
- 500 KM
- 8 Hours

Chennai-Addanki-Karempudi-Macherla-Sagar-Hyderabad
- 650 KM
- 8 Hours

Some of these places are very near to each other. Have a look at the travelogues, and then decide where you want to stay and which one you want to have a day time visit and skip staying.

If you feel there is lot of driving to do, then probably you could skip Kodai and head straight back from Munnar to Bangalore to Hyderabad.

Happy researching. Share your findings.
