End-point Ranchi is being pushed ahead to Kolkata.

Bsaed on Google Maps the route from Varanasi that I have envisaged is:

Varanasi, - Dalmianagar - Aurangabad - Barhi - Dhanbad - Asansol - Durgapur - Bardhaman - Turn right at Palsit - Singhur - Kolkata.

I am deviating from NH2 at Palsit. Should I do it ?

The best route from Dhanbad to ranchi is via Ramgarh, a good highway. Avoid the Palsit route.

Sir,

There seems to be a confusion.
My earlier plan was from Varanasi to Ranchi via Barhi. (last leg of the Pune Ranchi route)

Now I am planning Varanasi to Kolkata (No Ranchi).

I may come down with my inlaws to Ranchi from kolkata subsequently, BUT that is another story.

Can you please suggest your route from varanasi to Kolkata

Thanks

Sorry, a mix-up on my part. From Durgapur, follow the Durgapur Expressway to Kolkata, via Bardhaman, Palsit and Singur. I think at Palsit, the Durgapur Expressway takes its own path, did not realise that it leaves NH2 near Palsit.

That is true, you dont have to turn anywhere from Durgapur to Kolkata.

There is again some confusion.

When you turn right at Palsit, you leave the NH2.
NH2 continues on (as per Google Map) to Pandua, Magra etc...

Kingshukt, you would even know [ie think about it] where the NH2 branches off. The 4 lane of NH2 continues to become the Durgapur Expressway, and it seems as if that is like NH2.

Had a talk with Shantanu yesterday, around which date are you touching Calcutta [14th around?] - would be leaving for Nagpur on May 21st night. We sure will have a get-together one day in between!

HVK Sir,

You had suggested a route from Indore to varanasi (thro' Shivpuri).
I had then put up another alternate route thro' Bhopal.

Can you or someone please tell me which is better (Security aspects of the foremost importance.).

I really have to freeze the route, now. Since I hav'nt travelled on this route, all the names of places are just words for me..

I would prefer the route I have suggested.
+ Mostly good roads, except that NH3 is supposed to have some bad sections north of Indore now (was good in Jan)
+ Safe, except that avoid night driving after Varanasi, and also between Dewas and Jhansi
- check out JH stretches, Naxal problems are intensifying, we have no live update on roads affected, although I think you do not go to any unsafe teritory

@kingshukt: Plz follow the expressway from Dhanbad onwards. No need to turn anywhere. After crossing Dankuni toll plaza don't take 1st exit for Kolkata, since it would take you towards Kolkata airport through Dakhineswar.Continue driving straight towards kharagpur and take the 2nd exit for Kolkata, this will make you enter Kolkata through the 2nd Hoogly bridge.

Follow the coordinates indicated in the above link, has markings for turn off to Kolkata, at both exit points, as indicated by sbhaduri

@HVK, Sir:
JH stretches... Can you please clarify ?

@SBhaduri: You mentioned that we take the 2nd exit after Dankuni Toll plaza....
Dankuni is on NH2 and very near to Kolkata
I was contemplating turning right at Palsit (Palsit is after Bardhaman -17 Km from Bardhaman as per Google map).. quite some distance away from Kolkata.

@ADC: Should we start looking forward to a Nagpur travellogue ? If you are travelling by car what is your planned route ?

JH - Jharkand, from around Barhi to Ranchi.
Don't worry about the NH2-Expressway issues. Simply keep driving on the expressway till you reach the 2 flyover junctions - first one going via the Old Hoogly bridge, the second via the newer Vidya sagar Setu (if you want to go towards South Kolkata).
Please stick to the expressway, it is a wonderful drive, the old NH2 is a narrow road, avoidable.
