Pune to Himachal: Advice needed

Hi All! I am pleased to be a part of the team BHP.

Though I have been a regular reader of the forum for the last two years, this is my first post.
It's my tenth wedding anniversary and we are planning a trip to Himachal from Pune in the month of May. The travel team will be myself and my wife and our 8 year old daughter.
Wanted some advice on what can be a 15 day itinerary.

Which part would you like to cover? What are you looking for? Budget? Mode of Travel?

Mode of Travel will be by road . Ideally wanted to visit Spiti. But if that is far fetched in 15 days then can restrict it to Shimla Manali and around.
Budget will be moderate

driving down? budget for atleast 3 days to north each way considering you are driving with family:

Suggested itinerary:

Day 1: Pune - Shyamalaji (or mebbe Udaipur if you can push it)
Day 2: Udaipur - Rewari (between Jaipur and Delhi: stay at an RTDC hotel)
Day 3: Rewari - Shimla -> turn left after Rewari, immediately after 2nd flyover. Narrow but decent roads till Rohtak. roughly ~470 kms
Day 4: Shimla stay
Day 5 & 6: Kaza.
Day 7:Sangla
Day 8: Sangla to Renuka-ji
Day 9: Renuka-ji to Rajaji Natl Park
Day 11: Rajaji to Chittaurgarh
Day 12: Chittaurgarh to Vadodara ( can drive ahead to Pune if comfortable)
Day 13: Vadodara to Pune

Alternatively ex-rohtak you could do Mandi-Dharmshala-Udepur(Lahaul valley)-Gramphu-Kaza-Sangla-Renuka ji. but this would be more adventurous and not sure whether your car can handle the terrain here.

Thanks Cougar. Will do a little googling around the itinerary you have suggested. Am planning to drive down .

That would be a wonderful trip especially in a big MUV like Innova. You can keep 6-7 days aside for both sides travelling upto Himachal.

Remaining 9 days can be split in following ways:-

3 Days in Shimla

1 Night in Narkhanda

3 Nights in Manali

I visited Himachal during Dec'09. You may find some cues in my travelogue. If you need any specific information, feel free to PM me.

Thanks mobike008. Going through your travelogue now.

Currently working out the leave dates. Hopefully I get those two weeks off. Else I will have to opt to travel by the train / flight.

Not very sure of this. I would rather suggest you to drive down to Delhi, instead of going to Rewari. And then next day drive early morning from Delhi to Shimla

You might save on a few kms, but the road to rewari and then ahead is a bit iffy.

While it snot exactly a big highway, its a decent country road and most importantly helps to bypass the hellhole called Delhi. And it saves more like 70+ kms when headed towards Himachal.
