This was in May, can you imagine how it will be after the rains? It is an incredible sight, can't find my post-rain season photos.

The ones I posted were taken in November.
I did not see any water. I expected it to be loaded.
My contribution from Jul 2008, monsoon at its peak.
Photos look surreal.
In the May 1988 second photo, I can see graffiti on that rock in the middle of waterfall. Shocked.

Between Peringalkuthu Dam and Malakkiparai (KL-TN border), traffic is restricted at the CP between 9 pm and 6 am. Wildlife on the narrow road is high and there is hardly any room for both vehicle and beast.
I once tried to go through this route in a mobike, but I was forced to stay back in the verandah of a tea shop at the Peringalkuthu Dam CP. However, regulars - tea estate trucks and estate vehicles - going between Kochi and Valparai - are allowed through.

Its a beautiful falls and during monsoon it resembles a mini Niagara with water cascading down end to end.
The waterfalls features in a lot of Tamizh & Hindi movies. Pukar and Guru being the ones that come to mind immediately. Tamizh movies are too many to list. As Hvkumar said, it was more popularly known as Punnagai Mannan falls. Kamalhasan starrer. Can't forget watching the shooting of a Namitha song from close range (Tamizh guys will know about that song from Aiy ;P)
There are a few resorts just a couple of kms downstream from the waterfalls. I remember staying in one of them in 2001. Don't remember the name though.
There are a couple of smaller waterfalls upstream and some sort of rapids as well. I have done that route from Valparai to Athirapally and its awesome. Its something I want to do again. Hvkumar has really captured the gist of that route. There is almost no human habitation for quite sometime and the forest, river, leeches, elephant poo... amazing.
I'm surprised there's no travelogue for Athirapalli here in Tbhp.

5 kms upstream from Athirapalli is Vazachal, which is the second waterfall referred to by csenthil.

Actually there are quite a few travelogues in TBHP on Athirapalli. Here is one which I had put up in Aug'09 though to be fair I had actually opted to come via Athirapalli, Valparai, on my way back from Thrissur to Chennai.

Apart from Athirapalli and Vazchal there is one more major falls, Chapra falls which is gorgeous during monsoon time.
Some of the pics which I had put up in the Travelogue, though being taken on a mobile cam do not do justice to the majestic Athirapalli.

The road was in fabulous condition all the way upto Vazchal. After Vazchal upto Peringalkuthu dam the road was decent with some rough patches in between. Post Peringalkuthu the road is extremely lonely with some very bad patches. I had done the trip in my Wagon R so am sure it could be done in any car.

Have been there and its an awesome spectacle especially if your are at the base of the falls...have a few snaps of it somewhere.The spray was so bad that it was next to impossible to get a truly panoramic shot from there, but what a visual and auditory sensation it is.Truly wonderful waterfall.

Here's the youtube video of the song showing the beauty of that place (almost 25 years back).
