Our hospital has a satellite Clinic in Kaza (Spiti), and it was shared in our hospital staff whatsapp group, so I believe it. Rest everyone is most welcome to check with the service providers (Hotels, Campsites, Homestays etc.) about the authenticity of this news against their bookings or travel plans.

Planning to go to Spiti from Shimla during March 27 to April 3. Can I take my Innova Crysta or is a 4x4 must? I don't have much experience of driving in snow.

As of 7th March the Lahaul-Spiti valley is covered in snow. The road towards Sissu was clear and open, but I'm not sure about the Spiti side. Better would be to call a few Hotel or Homestay owners in Spiti and ask them about the road condition. In this weather, I guess a 4x4 will be much better, compared to Innova.

Attaching a picture panorama of the valley from Sunday.

Re: Lahaul - Spiti; Suggestions and help needed

Dear BHPians, a friend and I are planning to visit Manali, Sissu and Jispa at the beginning of November. The tentative plan is:
  • 2nd Nov: Board Manali bus from Delhi
  • 3rd Nov: Reach Manali, explore local places
  • 4th Nov: Head out to Jispa via Atal Tunnel and Sissu. Stay overnight
  • 5th Nov: Explore Jispa. Stay overnight
  • 6th Nov: Head to Manali, board bus to Delhi in the night

Can you please help me with the following questions?
1. I enquired with few hotels/homestays in Jispa and most of them were negative, sighting snowfall. Is it absolutely not possible to stay in Jispa?
2. Is it recommended to stay in Sissu instead? Do you have any recommendations?
3. If both Sissu and Jispa cant be accessed, what are charming but hidden places can be explored?
4. We plan to travel between the places on two wheelers. I am fairly experienced with motorcycles and have done few long trips. My friend however is capable of riding scooters only. He was prior riding experience in the Western Ghats but not in Himalayas. Should it be okay?

TIA!

Please go through some of the threads here and on the Leh thread. Make a rough itinerary based on the info you read and then post it here. It will be more understandable that way and members can share their views based on your requirements- the number of days, type of vehicle, travelling alone or with family.

I'm planning a trip from 19th June- 26/27th June from Delhi via Shimla. How are the present road conditions and any recommendations for a hidden gem in the valley?

Roads are very good overall. There is some section before Rampur thats not great because of road/dam construction work going on. Also any locations that are off the main Kaza road are not exactly tarred but mostly widened and quite doable (Chitkul, Mud, Dhankar, etc). But the section after Losar, just before Kunzum Top till you reach Rohtang Pass is worst (no) road imaginable. Doable but expect to drive for 4-6 hours under 10 km/h and back breaking and muscle paining. But it supposedly has amazing views we missed because we decided to just reach Manali at night from Chandratal as we didn't have any booking. Not the best decision haha.

We did Shimla-Sarahan-Chitkul-Kalpa-Dhankar-Mud-2xKaza-2xChicham-Chandratal-Manali.

I was initially planning to skip Sarahan, Chitkul and Dhankar but they all turned out to be great. I would say don't skip on Chitkul and Mud for sure. Kalpa has majestic views of Kinnaur.

You can take the Chail-Kufri road right after kandaghat if you want to skip the Shimla traffic.
While g-maps might show this route as the longer one, this is the more scenic route and will save you time as well.
