Road conditions update:- June-July 2022

I did the Spiti circuit this June. The itinerary being Shimla-Rampur Bushahr-Chilkul- Reckong Peo- Nako- Tabo- Dhankar- Kaza- Hikkim- Langza- Kaza- Chitkul- Manali

The roads from Shimla to Chitkul are a mix of good and bad, with bad roads and landslide prone in the later half of the way.
Roads from karcham to Reckong peo are beautiful and butter smooth.
Reckong Peo to Nako the roads are again butter smooth and fun to drive.
After crossing Nako, there is a very slow patch of about 20kms but don’t forget to check out the view of “Moonland Spiti”, you can find it on the maps too.
The roads till Kaza are okay and you can enjoy the view and cover the distance in decent time.

The roads to Hikkim are steep and a little narrow but manageable, worth the top view of the hamlet I say! Hikkim- Langza is a beautiful drive again.
The worst condition of the roads is the patch of Kaza-Chitkul-Manali, you will get a total patch of 20kms maximum which are normal driving conditions, the roads are non-existent and you have to drive very carefully as many people faced tyre bursting, but isn’t that what we all go to seek for to Spiti, adventure!

Wishing everyone a Safe and Fun journey to the magical valley!

I think you meant Kaza-Chandrataal-Manali instead of Kaza-Chitkul-Manali.
Please can you share more details about your itinerary, places where you stayed and your feedback on the same. I am planning to do Spiti circuit with family post monsoons. Would also appreciate some inputs on the driving times. Thanks.

I don't know when i will start my travelogue of my Spiti trip end of May but here are some time-lapse i made:

So even I did Narkanda-Nako-Tabo-kaza(2nights)- Manali this June end.
Narkanda - Nako - 7 hours
Place to stay - Kinner camp( little expensive but worth it after a long drive )
Nako - Tabo - 2 hours ( you might take longer if you want to see Gue Monastery which is on the way)
Place to stay - Phunstock Homestay/ Kunzum Homestay.
Tabo to Kaza - 2 hours again.
HIGHLY recommend Hotel Deyzor. Fantastic place to stay at and amazing food. I suggest you book this is advance.
Kaza - Atal Tunnel - 8 hours
Road conditions except Kaza-Manali are good and no need of 4x4. Would not recommend a sedan or a hatchback for the last section. A lot of people do it but I see no point wrecking the suspension of one’s car.
I would say the best part of Spiti is the driving bit so take your time and stop at places and remember to take it slow.

The kaza manali road may be bad, but it's the most exciting, and the most picturesque road in the history of roads. FYI.
I was there in the rains, and it was doubly so.

I saw your Langza timelapse so did you stay overnight at Langza? It says it was shot between Komic and Langza, where exactly? Where did you stay in Langza?

Fellas,

I am trying to plan a trip from 6-17 Aug 2022 for the entire circuit - Chandīgarh to Chandīgarh. I don't have my own car so I will take an Innova with a driver from Chandigarh.

Just wanted to know total petrol cost for the circuit so that I could probably plan to hire my own car too and also wanted to know if Aug will be a good time to visit? Yes, it will be raining but I cant think of any other time to go

I didn't stay at Langza. I drove from Kaza itself at night and left there around 4.30am. This spot is on the road you take from Komic towards Langza or vice versa. What i did on returning at night was turn towards Langza from Hikkim then turn around towards Komic at the intersection with Komic Langza Road.

Around here. Its the highest altitude road I drove around there.

I did make another Milky Way timelapse at Chitkul:

I would avoid this frankly. Regular news of landslides or cloudbursts. Try for September 2nd week onwards.

Folks,
Traveling to Kaza from Delhi coming weekend (ID week). Looking for updates on road conditions and good hotel suggestions for stay on Day 1 between Narkanda & Rampur. We plan to start from Delhi at 4 am.

Hi,

I am planning to do Delhi - Kaza (via Shimla) next month in my 10 year old Linea TJet. The car has a ground clearance of 170 mm and a wheelbase of 2600 mm. So thought of getting your views on couple of points.

1. How's the road condition on Shimla - Kaza stretch?
2. Is it advisable to do the trip in Linea?

Thanks

We are planning Ahmedabad-Spiti road trip in the first week of February 2023, anyone has similar plans ?

Spiti is a year round destination, but bare in mind that Spiti in winters is very harsh especially January to March. Firstly you need a 4x4 and with snow chains. Be prepared for road closures, no electricity, using dry pit toilets etc. Not that it is not doable but you need to prepare well. All the best.

Hi, i was planning a drive till spiti from shimla (starting tomorrow) and wanted to know road conditions and doability in a sedan(a4). A guide from my shimla hotel told me that i can probably drive till spiti but cant cross it due to water crossings. Any help greatly appreciated.

Roads are all open and clear now, with hardly any snow. Your car can go, within the limits of its ground clearance. Ask local cabbies for latest and most reliable information.
