Vaishnodevi and Place around

Hello All,

Me and wife are planning to visit Vaishnodevi coming Diwali.

Plan is as follows.

18th - Fly to Jammu then move to Katra and check in to a hotel for the night.
19th - Helicopter while going to Mandir and return walking.
20th to 22nd - Unplanned (need help here).
23rd - Return flight to hometown.

I need advice and suggestions as to where can I visit in the 20th to 22nd time frame.
The plan is to visit some near by from on 20th and return back to Jammu on 22th and stay in Jammu for the night.

We will be hiring a cab for traveling.

I've thought of a few options:

1. Patnitop.
Not sure of how would it be without the snow.
Is it safe to travel via Udhampur?

2. Dalhousie

3. Dharamshala.

I am aware of only these 3 places near by Jammu.

Please help me with suggestions and better ideas.

Re: Vaishnodevi and Place around

Hi, I live in Jammu and the 3 places you have mentioned are pretty much only places nearby to visit. Patnitop is closest and indeed without snow it'll be a little dull, but it'll be most peaceful this time of the year (less tourists and amarnath yatra closed). If mountains, weather and peace is what you are looking for, visit patnitop. And no, there is nothing to worry about in udhampur. National highway is open and peaceful now. So don't worry.

On the contrary, if you want to visit some happening place, go to Mcleodganj near Dharamshala. Its 4-5 hrs journey. There are some amazing trekking places nearby if you are willing to bear the pain and satisfy that explorer itch. But I think, 2 days will be little tight for that kind of schedule.

Forget about Dalhousie, its similar to patnitop in every aspect. It'll be unnecessary waste of time. On a side note, hills around patnitop experienced snowfall today. So may be, if you are lucky, you might experience snowfall at the time of your visit.

Do book Chopper Tickets in advance , for the free days - you can take a short fight to Srinagar , I can see some very competitive tickets ( Rs 1500 one way ) for these dates

Love the idea of flights to Srinagar.

How safe is Srinagar these days?
Any suggestions on good hotels around?

At the moment it's little tense, due to killing of a driver but it'll not effect you as they (locals) generally don't mess with the tourists. But keep an eye on the news on Kashmir before traveling as atmosphere their is as volatile as a grumpy wife..

My brother in law came back from Kashmir 2 days back and he was stuck for 6 hours on road because of stone throwing by locals at national highway.

Take a look at the travelogue section for hotel information. Or you can go there and check-out hotels near dal lake by yourself as most of them will be empty at this time.

I would suggest to add Srinagar to the plan as you have been thinking. Kashmir is a paradise and other places nearby Jammu are only consolations. I am sure that things would get settled before Diwali as even Kashmiris are dependent on holiday season.
The return flight can be from Srinagar.

The plan is fixed and the bookings are almost done.
Flights done hotels pending, will probably go with some tour operator as they are offering a good package deal.

The plan is after Vaishnodevi, come back to Jammu and take a flight to Srinagar.
As we land in Srinagar, the tour operator's cab and hotels will take care of us and show us the places around for 4 days.
Then we take a flight back to home.

Not revealing much details here, keeping them for the travelogue.
