Please don't travel through NH17 whether in kerala or in karnataka . In kerala there is virtually no road in kasargod and kannur districts . From there it is somewhat ok only 34 odd kms of bad roads in NH17 after that . That is in mahe- thalassery route , and 4 kms further (total 14 kms) while travelling north . And another 10 kms of bad roads before you reach kuttipuram bridge( towards south) . In kannur and kasargod , if you love your vehicle it will take half an hour to cover a kilometer .

Nh 17 in karnataka is very pathetic (hearsay) .

Nh 47 is ok from edappally to Alapuzha when compared to Nh17 . Only some bad roads , through which you can cruise at 60 kms / hr . From Alappuzha take changanassery route , so that you can travel through MC road until Thiruvananthapuram (kazhakuttam) .

You can also take chottanikkara route/sea port -air port road from edappally thus avoiding NH 47 and Alapuzha . This will take you to thalayola parambu , ettumanur, kottayam , changanassery , tiruvalla , chengannur route ( M C Road ) . This route is superb after chengannur until tvpm , even before chengannur it is ok , though narrow .

There are no hotels in Hogenakkal per se. You will need to come back to Dharmapuri and find a place
(Again I don't know any hotel there. But that is the closest town you have got.)
